We just went through this in a thread yesterday. Automatic holidays are red on the calendar. Anything else is up to your school.

EXCEPT elections days.

They are a mandated time off for workers during polling hours. (Korean election act).

So? That doesn't make it a holiday. Also, how many foreigners are voting in elections? How many bosses are going to let them off to go impossibly vote in something?

Actually, it makes the mandated time a holiday. Some foreigners do vote. What peeves me about the politicians is that they don't give a whit about us foreigners until eleciton time and then they talk to us. Sod off!

Fair enough, but if it's a holiday PROPER, why isn't it red? And when are election times?

It's not a red day because the calendars are prepared in advance of the year. The national assembly (aka parliament, aka congress) must enact legislation to designate which date will be the election date for various national offices.

You're telling me they didn't know more than a year out when the PRESIDENTIAL election would be? How is that possible?

Never mind. It's just one more bit of fine Korean planning.

Ask your co-teacher for a copy of the school yearly plan. It has all intended holidays, outings and events marked on it.

Don't you love it when the question has an easy answer? Very Happy

Actually, we shouldn't be so hard on them. After all, many parliamentary countries have elections called all of a sudden, such as in the case of a vote of no confidence or if the government of the day thinks that holding an early election will benefit them.
