Depends on the shirt. Polo shirts, I try to. The shirt I'm wearing right now, no.

No tie, no top button. Ever.

For formal events the top bottom will be done up with the tie. But, after the civility of the formal event ends, and the dancing and drinking begins, the top button comes undone.

If you're not wearing a tie, but you're doing up the top button anyway, you may as well just go the whole way: get a pair of hornrims, slap on the pocket protector and change your name to Poindexter.

A lot of Koreans seem to like the suit/no tie/top button done up look.

Personally I think it's a crime as the simple remove the tie undo the top button look is a timeless classic.

I was told that doing the top button up is more polite here though.
