|
|
I've been using Firefox for some time and like it, except for one thing. Other browsers (Safari, Explorer) have a kind of "shortcut / autofill" feature in the address bar. That is, when you start typing in an address, they automatically check your bookmarks and a drop-down menu comes up with possible matches. Firefox does this, but only if you've already visited that site already and haven't cleared your history. Firefox does not automatically scan your bookmarks for other possible hits (Is this making sense?)
Or at least, I haven't been able to figure out how to make it work the way I want. Is there a way?
(I use a Mac, btw.) |

Hmm, not sure if there's a feature that does that or not. But if you have it in your bookmarks why the heck would you type it in? Just click the bookmark... |

Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Remember what I've typed in forms and search boxes.
I think that's what you're talking about.

Actually, it is very similar to what he's talking about.
IE has "AutoComplete" for...
...Web Addresses,
Forms, and
Usernames and passwords on forms.
Quote: |
AutoComplete lists possible matches from entries you've typed before
|
while Firefox has "History"...
...Remember visited pages,
Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar, and
Remember what I've downloaded.
They may not be exactly the same in the way they function, but they are quite similar. |

1. Never said it wasn't similar. However,
2. both you and kprrok are telling him things he already said that he knows, and only mentioned to contrast with the thing he had a question about. Also, your reference to IE had nothing to do with anything anyone had brought up.
He specifically said he wants it to check bookmarks that he hasn't visited. You guys are talking about stuff he has visited. If either of you read the whole post you'd know he already knows about what you guys are talking about.
And don't worry, I forgive you. Just don't doubt me again. |

Aye aye Captain!
Wait a minute...you do have to visit a site before you can bookmark it, don't you? ...that is, unless you're importing or sth. |

If you import bookmarks bookmarks, OR if you clear your history you'll get the situation. Perhaps the OP clears history on a regular basis |

Aye, JJ's got it sussed. I clear my history and cache regularly, and was hoping there's an easy way to get Firefox to autofill its address bar more like Explorer (i.e. checking against bookmarked pages which are NOT in the current "history").
I did find a plugin / addon, but it was fairly messy and didn't last. Will have to check out version 3 when it's out. |

I've heard the beta is very stable, might be worth trying out. Supposed to be a lot faster too. |

If use Google.com instead of the default Firefox homepage, it will suggest popular queries based on what you begin to type in the search bar. |

If you don't want to change your homepage, you can also use the google toolbar extension to type in web addresses in the search box. I get rid of the address bar altogether and just use the google search box instead. If you don't mind not being able to see your url, then it's just as good and saves a lot of space. |

I have 8 pages that I want open when I start a browser, and this is easy to do in Firefox.
Set the tabs up exactly how you want them when it opens.
In the tools menu select options.
On the popup you should be able to see a button that says something like
Use current page(s) as your homepage.
Click that.
Next time you fire up the fox, it will start with all those tabs.
