If you had a million won to spend on a computer what would you get? I'm planning to have one built next month but I don't know that much about motherboards, video cards and processors. So if you guys could recommend a good processor / video card / mb to go with what I want, I'd really appreciate it! How does this sound:
4 GB RAM
1 TB HDD (for downloads)
250 GB System HDD
HDMI Video out (what kind of graphics card would I need for this?)
5.1 surround sound card
2 Firewire ports
Anything else? What about a Blue Ray or HD-DVD drive?
I already have a monitor so the money will all be used for the system itself. Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance |

Might that be a Q6600 quad core?
personally, I like the gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (or variant of the same) for a motherboard. (I have 3 of them in my computers at home).
It has surround sound out built in so you don't need an extra sound card. It also comes with 8 SATA (SATA-3 compatible) ports and an IDE socket for your HDDs as well as 6*USB 2.0 ports.
I would go with 2 or 3 *500gig HDDs instead of the terabyte HDD and 250gb HDD (just for the cost factor).
Not sure why you want the firewire ports but if you need them, a firewire card is cheap to add in (20k won or so).
4 gigs of RAM is overkill (and not all useable) unless you are going to a 64bit version of windows (I assumed you would be using this as a windows machine). 32 bit windows can only address a maximum of 3.4 gigs of RAM.

This may be true, but 2x2GB is more stable and overclockable than 4x1GB or 2x1GB + 2x512MB.
I've actually read a few places that the "excess" RAM isn't lost, but used in conjunction with the video card. Maybe that was just with the newer ATI chipset that has onboard video already.

So would I be better off running 64-bit Windows? How is that different from the 32-bit? I really don't know...
Also, would it be better (cheaper) for me to order the parts online (say from danawa) and take them to Yongsan, or would it be the same if I went to Yongsan, told them what I wanted and had them assemble it there?
Oh, and can anyone recommend a place that does quality work (in one afternoon would be ideal) and won't try to rip me off?
Thanks for the help guys. I'm glad I can learn from your experience! |

Danawa is just a list of all of the retailers in Yongsan, plus a few others. Your best bet would probably be to print off sheets for each item showing the lowest prices and take them with you to Yongsan. Try to get the lowest available prices, and count on about 20,000 for them assembling it.
Ordering from Danawa is cool if you're not close to Seoul, but you need a Korean to do it b/c I'm pretty sure it doesn't take an ARC number.
As for a store, just know what you want and how much it should be before you go and they shouldn't be able to rip you off.

J-tech at son-in plaza. The phone number of the place is 02-702-1908/15. They don't speak English but do speak tech. They are in the Son-In Plaza.
They will take your order, assemble your machine and have you out the door in about an hour or 2. Slower on Sunday, faster on Tuesday.
Parts + 20k won for assembly. 1 year parts and labor warranty. 10 years at the same location (long time in the computer industry). |

If you've got 1,000,000 to blow on just the tower no way should you settle for onboard sound. Get an x-fi audio card. Some of them have firewire as well.
Yes, get 64 bit windows so you can take advantage of your ram.
You should still be well under 1,000,000 so I'd kick it up to a 8800 GTX video card while you're at it. (The letters make a big difference, GTX is best, GT isn't bad, and do not get a GS)
Blu-ray isn't worth it yet. Get a good DVD burner, you can get one with lightscribe (which is pretty cool) for like 40k or something these days. |

Creative labs makes crap. Drivers are buggy and hardware is sub par.
Auzentech ftw or Asus Xonar.
I personnaly am done spending wads of cash on a pc. I would just buy a NAS device. Most times I wish I had more HD space. I have a TB now but I always want more stuff. |

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, I saw one of those in Akihabara--4 TB of storage (4 *1TB drives in a separate tower connected to the PC via firewire) for about 2,000,000 won. Are those cheaper in Korea? |

That'll put the price over 1mill. Maybe by 2 or 300,000... |

Personally I think the E8500 Wolfdale is a better buy than the Quad Q6600. It's better for overclocking, will get you better speed in the end, and not many programs are written to take advantage of 4 cores yet. Unless you plan on playing Crysis and encoding HD videos 24/7, I really think the more advanced, moderately priced dual core technology is better than quad at this time. One year from now, maybe that will change.
I have done a lot of research on this, as I am also currently building a new system for myself.
E8400 Wolfdale 3.0Ghz Dual-Core (can overclock to 4.0 possibly?)
GeForce 8800GT 512MB
2 GB DDR3 RAM (still have to research benefits of DDR3)
Igloo Queen Case (so beautiful....and cheap as hell - 250mm fan)
Already have 800 GB of HD space. |

Not sure what you want to use the system for, and that's a big thing to know when it comes to picking parts.
Let's assume you're playing games mostly, and want stuff for good overclocking. Just throwing out some numbers, may not even be exact...
MB: Gigabyte X38-DS4 230,000 (Crossfire capable, so go ATI)
CPU: C2D E8400 215,000
RAM: 4GB 2x2GB 100,000
HDD: 1x500, 1x250GB 175,000 (add another 500 when you need it)
VGA: Radeon 3870 220,000
Power: Zalman 600watt - 100,000
Case/mouse/keys: 100,000
Total: 1,135,000 KRW
And that's not even the best you could get.
If you're doing video editing or other CPU intensive stuff, you'd probably be better off with a quad core. Also, if you're not gaming, you could drop down to a 3850 for 150,000 and and a P35-DS3R for 130,000 thus saving some cash there making the Q6600 or the Q9300 within your budget.
More details about what you're gonna use the system for would be best if you want a better answer.

I'll mainly use it for watching movies / TV shows in HD, some video editing (though not all the time), some music recording, and generally as an entertainment center. I'm not really into gaming, and I have an XboX 360 for that anyway.
I will need lots of storage for movies and music though. |

With that in mind, might I suggest this:
MB: Gigabyte P35-DS3R 130,000
CPU: C2Q Q6600 230,000
RAM: 4GB 2x2GB 100,000
HDD: 2x500, 1x250GB 250,000
VGA: Radeon 3650 100,000
Power: Zalman 500watt - 90,000
Case/mouse/keys: 50,000
Total: 950,000 KRW
