Or more accurately, why I think it is more likely that the shroud is a medieval hoax and not the burial cloth of Jesus.

1) The weave of the cloth: there are no extant examples of Jewish burial cloths that use a complex weave like the shroud. All known cloths from that time do not use a herring bone weave but a simple weave.

2) No historical record: it's very odd that the shroud, no doubt a highly sacred relic, would just suddenly appear in the historical record 1300 years after the fact when there was a bull market for holy relics, from pieces of the true cross to the bones of saints.

3) Blood does not simply flow onto cloth like the neat pattern depicted on the shroud. It's an artist's conception, not what is known to forensic pathologists. Further red ochre and vermilion were found on the shroud. It was painted.

4) Body wrapping customs: Jews did not wrap the body by placing a long sheet under and over. They wrapped up bodies like a mummy. Further the bible clearly describes a napkin being put over Jesus's face. Very odd the image went through the napkin and then into the shroud. One would think the face image should be non existent, blocked by the napkin, or reduced in some fashion. But hey, a miracle can do anything right? A miracle can change the weave pattern too, I suppose.

Wasn't it carbon-dated and found to be of a different time period?

I think it would make a nice quilt cover. Can get one on Gmarket?
