What do you all feel would be the most effective way to pay bills off in your home country from Korea? Such as student loans, credit, etc. I know that there are different ways of doing this but i'm curious what method has worked best for you all and how you get it done considering the situation with banks in Korea. Thanks |

I have a separate bank account back in the States. I transfer back to that account, then I use that account to make transfers to my student loans online. You can also set up automatic withdrawals for many loans. I wouldn't bother attempting to do anything online with a Korean bank though, from what I've heard it's not an easy process. |

get an Internet checking account in the States and set up all of your bill payments thru that account (most accounts offer such a feature)
with credit cards, etc most have online sites where you can access and pay automatically thru there.
use your Korean bank to merely wire money back home to your account.
(and if you're saving money, get an online savings account in the US, you can get 3 percent plus now, whereas most traditional banks will pay something like 0.25% or some crap like that.) Such accounts allow you to link them to your other accounts (like your checking account at your "normal" bank) and you can transfer money back and forth at no charge. |

newteacher and bogey666,
which banks do you use/recommend, and in your experience, do not hassle you about the wiring/transfer?
thanks |

I use Wachovia Bank in the US. They do charge a bank wire fee but I negotiated it down to $12.50 per transfer from their standard $25.00 fee. In ten years I have never had a problem. On the domestic side I use Hana bank here or Shinhan. Not very happy with Hana bank but it is convenient for me (branch is 1 minute walk from my apartment). |

I'm not in Korea yet, will arrive in early May.
I don't foresee having to wire anything from my US banks to Korea unless it's some extreme emergency which frankly I can't even imagine.
I'll bring my US debit card with me in case I need cash for whatever reason early on in Korea before my savings build up.
otherwise, it'll be a one way transfer.. from Korean to US bank account.
I am told KEB bank exists where I will be teaching/living and they do this kind of stuff all the time without problems.
re American interent savings account, check out ING Direct, or HSBC, or Capital Plus, etc there are MANY options. |

Just to mention a couple of more popular internet banks in America
ETrade Bank
Everbank
ETradebank seems a little less shady than Everbank.
Both have low fees and high interest rates.
BofAmerica has good online banking now, but low rates and high fees. |

I got an account at my mother's bank with her name on it. That way I get
the 55 and over account with no fees and a higher interest rate. |
