Where is the best place to go in Vietnam (5 days)?

Also, what would 5 nights run a couple?

Book before, or when arrive?

My friend just went to Vietnam with his girlfriend. He said his airfare (on Vietnam Airlines) cost 520,000 won including tax and his stay will be like 9 days.

For more info, go to virtualtourist.com or tripadvisor.com.

5 days? For that short amount of time, I'd suggest going to Hanoi, then taking a 2-day trip to Halong Bay.

What kind of resort / hotel did they stay in?

We are just looking for a relaxing / laid back trip (to get away from Korea).

I also recommend a day trip to Nihn Bihn, the ancient capital, from Hanoi.

You can get good hotel recommendations through the Let's Go Vietnam guidebook.

Fair warning about the Vietnamese people: They will rip you off every chance you get. This may only amount to a dollar or two as the country isn't expensive to visit, but the hotels and places will rip you off for more. The worst part isn't the money, it's the hourly hassle of being lied to. Go to recommended ones in guidebooks, or call in advance and reserve for a confirmed price. If you get there and they won't give you the price in the book, negotiate or find a new place. Carry paper around and a map. Write down all agreed up on prices and circle it before accepting non-metered taxis and motorbike taxis and any other prices where you pay afterwards, like some restaurants. Even after showing the paper the people will try to scam you. Stay strong. And know your surroundings. Show the taxi drivers the exact road you want to take around Hanoi or they will take you a trip that costs 3 times as much.

Vietnam: Beautiful country, thieving ass people.

I agree that Hanoi would be the best to spend 5 days around.
Also, agreed that you have to really keep a watch on your money. Beware of 'taxes' when you stay at hotels. Make sure you ask the clerk if there are any 'taxes' add to the room rate before you book the room.

And, don't carry cameras, or bags with valuables on th e street side of your body when you walk. Moto-theives a plenty.

Agree with Hanoi or maybe a few days in HCMC and a few days travelling on the Mekong.

I second Cambodia - Vietnam is not very relaxing; interesting but pretty hectic

fly into Phenom Penh and catch a bus or boat to Siem Reap, very cheap and great places to visit, the people are lovely, shopping is fun

There are flights direct from Incheon to Siem Reap by Korean Air and foreign budget carriers. One deal is for three nights, five days to Siem Reap (just hotel and airfare) for 399,000 won plus tax.

A five day trip to Vietnam? Save your cash and travel in Korea. There are a ton of off-the-beaten-track places in Korea and five days is enough to check out a few.

A five day trip to 'Nam? It takes that long just to get thru immigration!
