GNP Scrapes Parliamentary Victory
A Strange Election
Pathetic Behavior in the GNP
Break the Cycle of Internal Struggles in the GNP by Kim Chang-kyoon
The Grand National Party won a slim majority in the general elections on Wednesday. As of 2 a.m. Thursday, the GNP had won 131 of 245 seats selected by direct ballot. The United Democratic Party won 66 seats and the Liberty Forward Party 14. Six seats were secured by the Pro-Park Coalition, a group of supporters of former GNP chairwoman Park Geun-hye who failed to win party nominations and defected. The Democratic Labor Party gained two seats.
The results mark a clear shift in power from the progressives to the conservatives. Progressives were the mainstream in the last parliament. But the UDP and DLP combined won only 86 seats in Wednesdays election for the 18th National Assembly, as against 185 for conservative parties -- the GNP, the LFP and the Pro-Park Coalition.

I'm glad Moon Kook Hyun managed to wrestle the seat off GNP old boy Lee Jae-oh. A lot of people have criticised Moon's Create Korea Party for not merging with the other left-wing parties, but I'm glad that Moon is sticking with his principles and not just following the party-hopping and merging ways of the others. |

The funny thing is that the GNP took the canal off their agenda before the election. It wouldn't surprise me if they rammed it though now that they control both arms of the government. |

But from what I've read and managed to decipher in the Korean press, the top people in the GNP have admitted to pushing on with the canal may be very difficult now. I think it's because the GNP is now trying to court the Park Geun Hye supporting independents, and Park Geun Hye is opposed to the canal.
Don't take my word on this though - my Korean is not great and I have been a lazy reader recently. |

I worked at YK for years and was always impressed with how he ran the company. |

I'll see if my wife can find something about it in the news. Hopefully they've given up on that one. The other problem is going to be healthcare. The GNP wants to go to a US style system, which would be nuts. Rumor has it Sicko is going to be playing on 40 screens in Korea. I'm not sure if anything in terms of opposition has been formed yet. |
