So let's see, Koreans have:
"the highest IQs in the world"
"are the hardest working in the world"
"have great hand eye coordination thanks to years of metal chopstick use"
"have an inconquerable spirit that is going to take over the world"
(thank you arirang)
but it's not until today that they could get someone into space?
Seriously though, kudos (cudos?) to the young chiquita for making it. Why was the other guy disqualified? All I heard was that he broke a rule.
And did you see the crowd at City Hall to watch it... jeebus these people can be nutters. |

She is a space tourist, not an astronaut, as Korea paid Russia to let it's PR object tag along. Remember their first candidate got the boot for trying to steal state secrets. I know people like So-yeon because she's a woman and borderline attractive, but don't get too carried away.
Korea is decades away from sending somebody into space on its own. |

the first guy was kicked off the team for repeated violations of protocol. basically the russians said that in space every detail was extremely important and the guy consistently cut corners after being reprimanded so they replaced him. i remember reading that in the news on yahoo i think. pretty typical i thought. |

Birdfool - Smee was right too - see the BBC article below for details:
South Korea says its first astronaut will now be a female engineer, after Russian officials rejected the initial candidate over a breach of rules.
Yi So-yeon, 29, is to replace Ko San, 31, on a Russian flight to the International Space Station in April.
Russia's Federal Space Agency requested the change because Mr Ko broke training centre rules, a senior official said.
South Korean officials played down the breaches, which involved removing reading material from the centre.
On one occasion, Mr Ko sent a training book back to South Korea - something he said was by mistake.
On another, he received a book from a Russian colleague that he was not meant to read, said Lee Sang-mok of South Korea's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
Mr Ko was replaced at the request of Russia
"The Russians emphasised the importance of abiding by the rules, as even small mistakes can bring about grave consequences in space," Mr Lee said.
Mr Ko, who beat more than 36,000 other applicants to the position, has been training in Russia since last year.
He will now serve as the back-up astronaut when Ms Yi flies with two Russian cosmonauts to the International Space Station in early April.
Ms Yi will spend seven or eight days there, conducting a series of scientific tests.
The mission will make South Korea the sixth Asian country to put an astronaut in space.

Can't wait until we have space tourism. All the Korean tour groups lined up at the check in counter with their boxes of space ramyon. |

Because their government coughed up $20 mil? I don't bring it up to Koreans, but it doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment. More like a publicity stunt. |

Man, we've golfed on the moon. Let them have their moment.
I do think it's funny though that they're making such a big deal about taking kimchi to the space station. Imagine if Alan Shepard had brought a quarter pounder with him. |
