I'm curious about the new presidents new labour policies. I did some homework reading and found his propositions to be anywhere from pleasant to downright absurd, and I'm not sure whether to tolerate the guy or despise him. Of course, my situation is special being an English teacher seemingly outside the realm of Korean labour law.

The things I've heard about Lee Myung Bak include that he wants to increase the work week to six days a week, that he wants to break apart human rights bureaucracies because they swell inefficiency, and that he wants to lower employment income in the hopes that it will raise higher in the future.

Are these things true? Can anyone provide links for good resources?

Ditto. What?

None of those measures are politically viable.

I know, that's why they are so shocking to me. I've heard this from numerous foreign teachers, some Koreans and in varying forms from my older students. The six day work week one is what I've heard about the most, the lowering wages one has only been spoken to me by two people.

Never happen. We've only been on the 5-day work week for a couple years.

I'd bet that they are either misinformed or you are misunderstanding.

Hmmm... I've heard about these things from so many different people. Maybe the gossip mill is churning here in Anyang as so many Koreans seem to hate the guy. In any case, where can I find some accurate resources regarding his policies?

I have heard one that sounds like it could be your "breaking apart human rights bureaucracies." Lee Myungbag wants to shut the door on military inquisitions, past and present. This covers accidental/mysterious death in the military where families are seeking compensation, as well as events like the Gwangju Massacre.

He was also looking to fold the Gender/Equality Ministries into a larger one - but that's not really "breaking the back" of them.

Similar to him wanting to fold the Unification Ministry into the Foreign Affairs one.

They must not hate him or his party that much. The GNP just won a majority in the National Assembly(153 of 299) based on the front page of the Chosunilbo Newspaper. That means in all likelyhood him and his party will be pretty much free to push through any and all "reforms" they want to including moving Korea to an American type health care system. It wouldn't surprise me if they also tried to ram through the canal plan as well.

The chabols have gotten their money's worth and then some.

This government will NOT be friendly to labour, this is no secret.

It amazes me that some foreign instructors seem to think that because Lee is "English-friendly" that he'll be good to foreign instructors. Foreign instructors are employees, i.e. labour, so folks, expect things to get worse, and get organized.
