I recently quit my job at a hagwon without giving 30 days notice. The school had been refusing to pay into the pension system or health insurance, and I went through a lengthy battle, visits and phone calls to the pension office, and many discussions with my manager. The manager wouldn't budge at all, and eventually, in the later stages of the battle, became frustrated and threatened me and a co-worker with termination if we continued to ask for pension. The school screwed me over on everything - pension, medical insurance, and vacation - and refused to budge no matter how much documentation I showed them to prove my points. Finally, I got sick of their lying, and given their multiple violations of the contract, I walked into my manager's office and quit. The manager said that my contract stipulated I couldn't do that without giving notice, but I pointed out the multiple places they had violated the contract, so I said I was violating it on the quitting notice. I walked out of the building.
I have a strong feeling that they may try to withhold the pay for the last three-and-a-half weeks that I worked, citing some reason about me quitting without giving notice. Keep in mind, I did this after they had violated multiple important parts of the contract repeatedly and I was having minimal success with fighting them on it. Am I still entitled to my pay for the days I worked, and if I have to fight for it, where's the best place to start?

It's illegal in Korea for an employer not to pay the money that they owe you no matter what.
I had the same problem last year. I walked out of my job and they with held 6 weeks worth of pay. After 2 months they still hadn't paid so I went to the labor board. The next day the school called me and coughed up. |

labor board. Call 02-1588-1350 from your cell phone. Extension 7 for English service and information.

You have my sympathy. Seriously.
Every time I hear another one of these awful stories regarding these w4nkers screwing FTs over, it makes me so fuckin5 angry.
My GF has 4-months left on her contract and she's been making some preliminary enquirees regarding claiming her pension/tax back etc (she's American) and it's transpired that everything is far from being in order. Basically, her boss hasn't been doing, or should I say paying, what she should have been. Now it may be that everything works out and she gets every penny she's supposed too, but I can't help but feel (I'm in a HS) that we're going to be experiencing something similar to your unfortunate situation a month or two down the line.
I hope you get everything owed to you.
On a related note. I beginning to wonder just how long it'll be before some FT, through no fault of their own other than through being well and truly pi55ed about like this after having been well and truly shafted financially, will seriously lose it and end up giving one of these nasty owners a serious going over. Know what I mean? Given some of the shocking stories we keep hearing about, I reckon it's only a matter or time before an FT really flips over this kind of 5hit. |

1350 is all I've ever needed to dial from my cellphone. And I'm not in Seoul either. |

Just because I don't trust them, I'd also recommend calling the tax office to see if the taxes you've been paying actually went to the tax office. I think you need their business number which I don't know how to find. |
