As some of you will know, I walked out/told to go on my last hagwon
gig and came back to the UK, I have written to worknplay and they
have said that as long as I have handed in my ARC and have had my
visa cancelled I'm good for a new visa as of now.

Im going through the process of getting a GEPIK place in Bundang or one of the surrounding areas. (where I can get the subway into Seoul)

Can anyone give me any advice of which suburbs of the greater Seoul area that are covered by GEPIK are decent? I have been told Bundang is a nice place to live but are there any other places as nice as Bundang? And anywhere to watch out for?

Cheers! And you are witnessing the quickest comeback in history since Sugar Ray Leonard first retired from the ring! Laughing

You want Bundang or Ilsan.

Hold out for a school in Pundang (Bundang). I turned down other offers and landed nicely on my feet in Sunae Dong. The academic level of students in this area is relatively high because of their parents' affluence. I have a nice apartment, great school, motivated students...life is good. Oh, and there's plenty to see and do around here. The only downside is that the cost of most things is higher than my previous location (Yongin), but that's a small price to pay for the improvement in living standards.

Footnote: Glad to see you've decided to get back in the saddle. I always enjoyed your posts Wink

Bundang is most popular but hardest to get.
Ilsan is 2nd, then Bucheon, Anyang, Suwon, Ansan and Yong In.
Uijeongbu and Shiheung also get a few applicants.

If you have any experience and teaching quals ( Cat. 1 or 2 ) ..hold out for Bundang.
Category 3 teachers will find it a battle getting Bundang though.

I'm curious how you would decribe a nice apartment in that area. I have a friend teaching in that area who has a very small one-room that his school pays 370,000 a month (plus 10,000,000 key money) for. Much too small for him, he says.

Why don't you get a good job in the UK? Kick the idea around w/ some of the older guys at your club, I'm sure they'll have some ideas.

I like Suwon. It's the biggest city in Gyeonggi, so you'll find pretty much everything you need. There's a decent expat community if you know where to look, but if you aren't into that, you wont be smothered by foriegners. It's pretty close to Seoul, (you can bus it to Gangnam in under 45mins and take the subway to Seoul Station in about an hour). Also, as a major centre it is easy to travel around the country without having to travel to Seoul first.

You wont find the affluence of Bundang here, and it can be a little bit grimy, but it has its nice areas too.

Not to mention rent is cheaper here than in some other places so your chances of getting a decent apartment are pretty good.

Oh and the RLD here is pretty big if thats your bag, Wink

In my last apartment in Yongin I barely had space for my 2-person table and chairs plus bed. Here I've got a table for 4 people (small people though), 2 armchairs, and a kitchen with extended benchspace, as well as my other furniture. The teachers in the officetel next to me have loft apartments, meaning that they have high ceilinged, split-level apartments with stairs leading up to a loft. These are all 1-room apartments, but decently sized.

I agree that's it's harder to get placed in Pundang because many people want to work here. Hold firm and tell your recruiter that you only want to work in <insert locations of choice>. If they don't have any placements there, change recruiters. Eventually your patience will pay off.

Do you know how many pyeongs your place is? Pretty esoteric question, I know.

I was offered a HS school position in BUNDANG, but declined because it was a technical high school. I personally wouldn't want to live there because the cost of living would be high...

I'm a newbie too~~
