|
|
Hi everyone,
I'm planning on a romantic evening with a couple of bottles of wine and some sushi for a change of scene but being a beer drinker I haven't got a clue where to begin.
Can anyone out there recommend a good wine in the 20-30,000 won range? I heard Chilean reds were pretty good? Also is it ok to mix a bottle of white and a bottle of red in the same sitting or should I just stick to one or the other?
Any info. would be appreciated. |

Red wine will be awful with Sushi.....the tannins will overpower anything from the rice to the sashimi and everything in between. If you really want to have a western drink with your meal, the best thing to do is get a fairly light and fruity white... Savignon blanc or Kabinett...
Otherwise... do as nature intended and get some Saki to go with your Sushi! Thats the way to go.
Guten appetit!

Pinot Noir is a good match for suhi, more so the tuna than white fish but it really does match up well. Bigger, tannic reds are no use as the geezer above says. You can get a few reasonably priced Pinots now. Check out the department stores, Lotte, Shinsegae, Hyundai etc and have a look at the Chilean and Argentenian ranges. Pinots for about 20,000w. Names like Adobe, Cono Sur and Alamos are what you should be looking for.
For whites I reckon you could do well with the Laroche Viognier that can be got a Les Vins Maeils in Jamsil. Only 16,000w as well. Emart has some decent NZ Sauvignon Blancs for about 24,000w that might be a bit over the top but will work.
If drinking white and red as a rule of thumb start on white and move on to red. |

Seconded, the opinion on Sake.
If you want grape wine, specifically something dry, go with a Chardonnay. Lindemans (Aussie) makes one at good value. Wolf Blass is a little pricier but worth it.
The next pairing in sweetness is Semillion. Marta's Vineyard (Maipu, Argentina) does it right, as well as Kalin but that one is pricey.
Then there's White Zinfandel. Women LOVE blush wines. They are a little sweet and all pretty to look at. California has a slew of White Zinfandel.
But one night at home, with nothing better to use, i tried sushi and Brut Champagne. It was great.
If you want something really different, and your girl knows something about wine, go with a German Gewurztraminer. It can be had dry, and has slight 'spice' to it. I think it would be really cool. |

This is a little off topic, but still wine related.
There was an article in the paper (JoongAng Daily)yesterday saying that wine prices should drop soon because the supermarkets are cutting out the middlemen. It said some wines at Homever will drop by 40% this Thursday. It also said E-Mart will be lowering their prices in the future.
Good news for winos!
When is the last time you heard booze was getting cheaper! |

I sincerely hope this turns out to be true.......but I suspect that the Korean retailers will continue to take full advantage of the Korean belief that wine is a 'luxury' product and continue to rip us off. |

if you're looking for sushi, i have a good suggestion for you. i have done this many, many times.
go to emart (not very romantic, i know, but bear with me...) and go to the seafood section. pick up one of those large trays of raw fish. they cost about 30,000 for a good tray. or... you can go to one of those "회" restaurants and order a tray of fish. they are everywhere.
regarding wine; i would suggest sticking with one or the other and i would choose red despite most saying red doesnt go with fish. i think it does. actually i think red goes with everything except vegemite but that's just me. i love the stuff.
not much great wine here outside seoul (that i have seen), but in emart there are good enough australian and french ones for 30 bucks or so. take a look.
take her to the beach if there is one available to you. failing that - go to a park or a river.
and away you go...
i have done this with both girlfriend and party with friends - i love it. |

If you want cheap wine go to homeplus. They have LOTS of wines for 8,000won or less now. They dropped their prices recently. I'm drinking a 2,900won bottle of Spanish red right now. It's not classy but it's 10,000,000x better than Jinro House wine haha. This Spanish red is perfectly drinkable for a non-special occasion, and cheaper than getting drunk on beer.. |

Jinro.....mmmmm.. that delightful mixture of musk sticks and petrol. A memorable drop! I suspect they come in 'half' bottle size because a full 750mm probably induces blindness.

Terrazas aldo chardonnay would be perfect with the meal you described. It's one of the best wines I've had recently. |

shhhhhhhhh!
The OP is right about the Chilean reds. Due to the altitude they have a much fuller taste. by far the best quality to price wine is the Santa Rita Cabernet Sauvignon. 2006 is the best. Only 13,000 won a beautiful bottle.
en vino, veritas
