i have a question. i mean ...people at dave's esl cafe can represent the whole english teachers in korea ? or people here are just negative -minded?
the reason i told this is the most english teachers i have met in person are pretty cool and open-minded. they didn't complain too much as you guys do.
so do i have to jump on the conclusion that english teachers are two faced people ? or just only losers log on the internet and write negative posts...? |

Well, if you took the time to think, posting about anything on an internet board is easier than bringing crap up in a social situation where everyone has different ideas. Just because people don't bitch and moan at work or something doesn't mean anything. You can not compare and internet board to real life conversations. |

Yeah, none of my friends in real life complain about Korea that much. Of course there is the odd complaint, but no one hates it here or is generally negative about Korea, and many of the people I'm referring to have been here two or three years. If they were going to be complainers they would've started already.
I'm going to say that it is a trend on Dave's, or that people come here to vent and maybe if you met them in real life you wouldn't think they were the Korea hating type.
Some people here hate this country as much as I'd hate living in a Iraq. Sometimes it just makes no sense. |

This is a bit stalkerish, but I was curious so I looked at Daniel's post history. These are the last 10 threads he has posted on:
A little lonely in Yangsan
girls! girls! ex-pat girls!!!
why ex soviet women are so gorgeous?
You are often told handsome or pretty by korean
do u find this korean attractive
which dance is the best seducing girls in the club?
how much money do you spend on weekend is you go
westerners, can find pretty girl back home easily?
korean's view on english teachers
people here can represent whole english teachers
I'm seeing a theme. I predict the next 3 threads will be:
Something funny happen when I was watching this white guy pee
What do english teachers balls smell like?
When you go club: Roofies or GHB? |

It would be some pretty faulty reasoning if you did! |

One think I've noticed is that if I start a positive thread it tends not to get too many hits, but negative ones attract a lot more attention, just because it's more interesting. Do you want to watch the six o'clock news and hear about what a pleasant day it was for most people or do you want shock and controversy? Why do you think no one watches Arirang News?
The other thing I think brings out so much negativity on the Internet re: expat life in Korea is Koreans' tendency for self-congratulation. Ridiculous slogans like 'Hub of Asia' just invite mockery.
Finally, I think that the fact that we're made to feel so aware of our foreigness over here causes us to focus on Koreans' peculiarities and not things we have in common.
That said, for the record, I like Korea, most Koreans, and I especially like working and teaching here. |

you need a good hagwon or, better yet, a one on one writing tutor. I know a Mr. Choi who goes by "Dr." Choi-even though he doesn't have an undergraduate degree. He teaches an English writing course in ALL Korean. Don't fret though. He'll have your homework marked by a genuine "white guy". PM for his number. |
