Korea's a pretty unique country. Maybe the reason so many foreigners here blow their gasket, or have been doing so lately on this board, can be explained by this.

Korea is probably the only country in the world that:

1. Was not colonised by, or had ancient contact through trade or wars with, the West.

2. Has not had a long tradition of Westerners studying the history and culture, or 'going native' here.

3. Is loaded.

Comparatively I think we know f' all of f' all about this place. Feel yourself as the pioneering explorer of this largely virgin culture that you are.

Korea you magnificent weirdos, I salute you.

The reason it 'is loaded' is because of the West.

K is NOT unique; much of their culture patterns parts of China, not to mention Japan.

they may not have been colonized by the West but they sure as heck are OCCUPIED by the west, as in, duh, right now Rolling Eyes

1.5 billion East Asians can't be wrong.

Yeah, but it's still really only had 50+ years of Western contact. Korea was known as the Hermit Kingdom, after all.

^ I think there's definitely something in that. A lot of the rest of the world is too easy to get a handle on. Korea really challenges your assumptions.

To us, it's like a weird modern art painting and we can't figure out why it looks all wrong.

A whole lot of Germans were wrong around 1939... This is quite obviously faulty logic again. Confucianism actually keeps progress back by not allowing free thinking.

That doesn't say anything about his point. Korea would be a poor farming province of China right now if it wasn't for the West.

So if i say it politely will the mods not rip my post out?

I'm not allowed to say that lying, cheating, stealing hogwan owners are the reason many people blow a gasket? (I'm so sorry i called you a name!)

Oh, yes, I'm sorry...Confucius has made life better for all Koreans and those who encounter Korea. Just as Mohammed has made the Arab world better, etc. etc....

Not as such, but the American military has left its mark. Canned corn and spam in everything are not really the earmarks of Korean traditional cooking.

Some are making up for lost time.

I would call Mongolia a virgin culture and one might feel like a pioneer there. In 1996 one might be a pioneer in Korea.

Here are some cool things about Korea from the perspective of a South African .

1) Kids safely wandering the streets alone at night .

2) Relative lack of class system. Where I come from we find more extreme cases of wealth and poverty and it obviously is a catalyst for a lot of cr!ppy stuff in society .

3) Women that act feminine .South African girls , god bless them , are still mostly a good bunch who haven't caught the narcicism bug as bad as the rest , but they could afford to be a little more "dainty" .

4) The materials available for our jobs .

The rest is cr@p , including the quality of lifestyle , oppresive culture , lack of space , materialism and xenophobia . I am very glad I was not born Korean . I have spent my youth around the xhosa people of rural south africa .A mud hut and straw roof living people who value cattle as their highest commodity and live in extreme poverty , but seperated from the materialistic media machine . I would be willing to bet that if it could be quantified and measured that the average xhosa person is 10 times happier than the average korean . There's something wrong with that picture .

Korea sadly has all the content of the western world , without any of the context . It's a hollow and empty existance devoid of insight and sadly the people don't value thinking for yourself enough to suggest it will ever change . Americans , by the way , you're in the same boat .

americans think they live in the center of the universe for a reason: they do. why do you think we are all here doing this? the world is americanizing. we are one cog in that machine.
