I no longer wish to try and change things. I'm sick of getting a blast of "you just don't understand Korean culture" everytime I try and make some improvements.
They want me to stand in front of the class while the Korean teacher teaches all in Korean.......fine.
They want me to have zero input on lesson planning and materials....fine.
They want me to be an Englishee-robot....fine.
I'm not going to fight them anymore. It's simply not worth the hassle.
I'll just do what they ask of me, smile and take my pay.
And they wonder why EFL is failing in Korea.  |

Well, it means you will never be out of a job, and so too for everyone else teaching EFL in Korea.

| these problems are not unique to korea, they come with life experience, iv only been in korea a week now but I am not rushing in to change the world and do amazing lessons. In order to impress all you have to do is arrive on time, smile and look pleased to be there. Work hard at all they will want you to do more and more until you explode. teaching is a job which you can never stop working on. |

Just to highlight the diversity of experiences, mine is almost totally opposite.
I teach 15 first grade classes and 3 second grade classes in a high school.
I make all my own lessons. My Korean teachers have little to do, as I do all of the discipline, explanation, sentence correcting and classroom management. Sometimes I will ask them for a word or two in Korean to make my explanations clearer.
One teacher likes to translate my instructions to Korean whenever she feels they were too complex or fast. She asks me first and I always say yes.

| Man, I'd love to have that right now. 8 months in and I do all the teaching, all the prep, everything. Sometimes I'm lucky if the korean teacher graces me wit his or her presence. And when they are there, they are surfing on the internet...nice. |

I would settle for mediocre lessons if I were allowed to help in their formation.
I have 7 + years of teaching experience, more than 5 of which is in Korea.
Do you think they might think I have something worthy of contributing?
My co-teachers have NO experience teaching English, but they are in charge? WTF?
Can it get any more idiotic? 
Sadly, the answer is YES, it can always be worse.
I could be having to worry about my next paycheck and whether or not my boss is going to turf me out at the 11th. month to save paying the final benefits. |

I am glad I don't work in a public school.
Though the terms of work are good and you don't really have to do anything, I couldn't put up with the stupidity that the OP explained. |

Don't have to do anything? So I guess those 21 classes I taught this week were just a dream? I believe the majority of native teachers in public schools run their own classes. Ideally the class should be run by the native teacher about 70-90% of the time |

When I get to Korea I am going to have no pride, no expectations of being treated with respect, and no expectations of being treated as a real teacher. If I am not treated in these ways, I honestly won't be bothered, as long as it isn't to the point of being invasive or unbearable. If I do have such expectations, I will most likely be setting myself up for dissapointment it seems.
The only things I expect are to do my best, really try to be a good teacher, and for all the details of my contract to be honored, especially being paid on time. Beyond that, if they want to ignore me, or disrespect me, or not value my opinion, or whatever, I'm not gonna be upset at all, i'm no stranger to bad employers or co-workers and i've gotten paid much less to deal with these sorts of things already. |
