I was told by my new employer that they would pay for housing for me as stated in the contract. I told them I would look for an apartment. The agreement was that they would pay the key money of 5 mil as well as monthly rent of 400,000 and that when I found an apartment, I would have to call them to arrange payment between them and the real estate agent.
I found a flat. I called my boss, no answer. The real estate agent wanted a 10% deposit of the key money, 500,000 won, or else the flat would be given to someone else. I called my boss again, no answer. No answer, no answer. I called my friend who spoke to the real estate agent. She told me the real estate agent wanted the deposit immediately or else the apartment would be given to someone else. I paid her then texted my boss immediately afterwards. She told me that the company would reimburse me within two days. I faxed over my bank account info.
Two days go by, nothing. I asked her what was up. "Send us your bank account info."
I faxed my bank account info over to them, again. A day goes by. Still nothing.
I call her, no answer. Call her again, still no answer. I am obviously being avoided.
Another day goes by. I call her again. "Did you fax your info over to the company?"
"Yes, I faxed my bank info over to the company twice, and I scanned it and sent it in an email over to your email account."
"Okay, the company is going to reimburse you after the weekend. If you are desperate for money, I can give you the money now and then when the company puts it into your account, you will have to pay me back."
"It doesn't need to come out of your pocket. It needs to come from the company. I need to be reimbursed as soon as possible. Again, I need to be reimbursed as soon as possible," I told her.
"Thank you for understanding, they will reimburse you by Monday or Tuesday," she said.
Yesterday, Monday, after work, still no reimbursement.
This is beginning to really annoy me as well as piss me off. I was told I would be reimbursed by last Thursday, then by Friday, then by Monday, then by today. If it isn't put into my account by today, I will not be going into work tomorrow. Would I have a leg to stand on if I called her and told her that I wasn't going to come into work until the money was paid back to me?
That would obviously create some unwanted tension and I think she knows this and I think she wants to use this to her advantage or simply ignore me altogether.
I have asked this before and I will ask this again.
WHY? WHY? WHY are these people here so FUCKING SKETCHY WITH MONEY? Now I know why international businessmen are wary of coming here to Korea. Now I know why this place IS off the beaten path, why people go to Hong Kong, to Beijing, to Shanghai, to Tokyo, to Singapore, but stay clear of this nonsense altogether. Truly, disgusting. |
