for REAL ID that is. LINK
Quote:
Columbia (WLTX) -- In a candid discussion Tuesday in the State House, Governor Mark Sanford spoke to state officials during a budget meeting on the Real ID Act, and a new letter to Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff.

In a letter Sanford wrote to Chertoff, he stated, "I think it is important I be clear: we did not request an extension under the REAL ID Act."

This is sensible. I don't know what Congress was thinking sending an unfunded mandate to the states. Why should state governments pay for beltway mandates; state capitols are not bureaucratic outposts of the federal government. This whole act will accomplish nothing it seems to me but increase nanny state intrusiveness into our lives.

I found this from Wiki. Keep in mind both he and the legislature are in the same Republican Party.
Quote:
Sanford has sometimes had a contentious relationship with the South Carolina General Assembly, even though it is controlled by his party. The Republican-led SC House of Representatives overrode 105 of Sanford's 106 budget vetoes on May 26, 2004.[6] The following day, Sanford brought live pigs into the House chamber as a visual protest against "pork projects".

My parents moved to SC last year. They said they needed just about every other possible form of identification, including their ME drivers licenses, to receive a SC drivers license. This included:

A social security card
Birth Certificate
Passport (at a time where it could take 8-12 weeks to get issued one)
Other State Drivers License

Chertoff is an idiot, per usual.

Real ID is a disaster waiting to happen. Several other states have backed out already.
Missouri just joined the list.

That is what is needed. The states need to tell the Federal Government to take their stupid ID and and shove it where.... well, whatever happened to the principles of Federalism and the 10th amendment Question
