...and merging into Taeglish. This is good for foreigners looking for an English-friendly dojang, mind you. But selling out your national sport? It all feels like a cultural fire sale, at this point.

Taaekwondo is a fucking joke to begin with I always thought Taekyun was a more of a Korean sport, Teakwondo just became more popular due to olympics. . Big fucking deal english instruction..
I am in Kyuk Too Ki and my master uses english terms, and he doesn't speak english either.. Did he sell out? No its just that Kuyk Too Ki borrowed a lot from other martial arts that originated in English.
Do I call my master a Thief? *beep* no. Stupid post stupid article and you are not that wise to post it here. Cause people like me will just Flame you.
Even in North America we call it Taekwondo. Are you accusing North American stealing the National sport of Korea?
Stupid marketing ploy and your too stupid too see it. |

Taekwondo had only been in the Olympics the last two times. Taekwondo has been a popular matial art much longer than that.

Very few martial arts originated in English. Most martial arts terminology has been imported into English from other languages. |

Taekwondo is basically a martial sport. That is true in the US as well as here. That can also be said of many martial arts and the preceding Taekgeyon comment might hold true also but I studied Taekgeyon for two years and can honestly say that it's one of the most brutal martial arts I've ever studied. And before I get bombarded with any amrchair heroics, I studied Muay Thai in Bangkok for a year so I've got some hard fighting experience to compare, be sure.
Sadly Taekwondo has evolved into a feel good, bread and butter martial art that endowes you with about as much effective combatives as Tae Bo. |

Curious.. If your such a elite fighter how many fights have you had? Whats your record.
As brutality goes nothing is more brutal then street fighting...
I am also very skeptical of claims of people when it comes to Martial arts, and combat. In my experience I have MET 0 thats right 0 foreigners that are into Martial arts, or combat sports. I have been here for 3.5 years as well. Seen many tournaments fough in some and frankly I never EVER see a foreigner, in the crowd.. Well sometimes but they are usually overweight females. (My last tournament) Hell I have a hard time finding people that are even into excercise.. I call bullshit on most I don't know about you but until you prove otherwise I have to lump you with the rest of the Arm chair fighters club. Proof is needed.. |

To those of you that do Taekwondo, at the begining of class do you bow to the Korean flag, as is required?
Karate has 3 bows, instructor, dojo, and each other, no bowing to flags. |

Lol I agree. Seen my Master Demolish an supposed Ex-Pro Boxer, in Boxing no kicks. I demolished a Takwondo high level blackbelt.. I didn't even have a belt Same thing with a Hapkido blackbelt, he got his ass handed.
Unfortunatley just like many haqwon owners in Korea there too many so-called masters in Korea. I am lucky I get actually trained by an expro. |

i do taekwondo, i have been doing it for well over a year now, it is not a brutal sport, because it had to be modified to make it safe for the olympics, feet must be placed forward so as to not kick someone with the ball (underside, don't know it's official name, but that part under your big toe...and also so as to not kick them with the heel of your foot too). i got my black belt and it only involved about 25 seconds of fighting and you had do the formation thing called poom se (spelling).
I did boxing for 8 years, as an irish person it's part of your way of growing up. My father was and still is a boxing coach in my hometown. Boxing is way more brutal than taekwon do, (well for the amateur learner, i can't vouch for professionals, but i wouldn't like to fight any of the masters around here) but i think taekwon do has much more skill; kicking is more difficult, balance, and overall everything is harder to master than throwin a jab, hook or uppercut.
My master teaches his kids in English, they count in english and he tries to teach them the names of kicks and stuff, it is not a marketing ploy by him, he just likes to speak english and the kids love to try speak it too. |

Wow, you want to get out some more. Maybe you should try a fight in a few proper tournaments. When i was in Seoul i trained at K gym ( Muay Thai) in Northern Seoul everyday with 2 other westerners and also fought in a few tournaments. I'm also good friends with another fella who just won gold in a Muay Thai elimination competition, also in Seoul. Perhaps you should try not being such a *beep* and you might meet a few more foreigners with similar interests. |

Boxing is pretty difficult.. It doesn't seem like much but If you truly want to be good at it.. Effective/Devistating striker it takes years..
As far Taekwondo taking a lot of skill, yes and no. No for any effectivness or skill Yes for performance art.
If your looking into Entertainment factor Taekwondo is interesting, if your looking into actualy doing something with it.. Well thats just not going to happen. Take Muay Thai or Kickboxing/Kyuk Too Ki or JuJitsu, or even Judo those martial arts require tons of skills.
I just don't care for Taekwondo, never have never will, I think its a goofy ass martial art with little or no practicality.. I considered it as Tae Bo equivalent. |

it's easy to say that all martial arts has no practicality, try doing a back spin kick or a jumping round house kick, quite hard but when will you use it?? i know by practicality you mean in a street fight when will you get the chance to do a round house kick or even half the stuff thats in the "poome se"??? true
i see you point, but look at all the other sports (martial arts) you mentioned, where is the practicality in them??? if someone attacks you, there is a good chance there is going to be more than one of them, so you just get your ass kicked anyway, then what if they have knives , guns or syringes, i know i would just give them my shit and save myself an ass kicking.
i don't do taekwon do to ever use "practically" because i never intend to get into fights, it was the same with boxing i did it cos i liked it, people have different opinions, let them have it.
at least you brought an arguement with some reason to the thread , and not just said "thae Queer do", and think that was a great point. |
