I didn't vote, but I do think the sentence is justified. Also I think he will die in prison but from natural causes.

10 years for burning down a wooden structure (though it is a national treasure)

vs.

3-6 months for rape or forcing prostitution of underage girls

Pick your battles.

I think they should tie a horse to each of his limbs like they would have when Namdaemun was first created

If it's good enough for a baby pig at a Dokdo protest, it's good enough for that stupid S.O.B.

although he did bring to light a hiden problem: that of developers and big business not properly compensating homeowners/landowners when they decide to build a new highway, office block, or whatever:)

I'd have to agree with bibbity, it's just an old structure, sure it sucks but ppl put way too much value in material things.

Don't forget that guy who murdered his Vietnamese wife. He got 12. Murder is a little more of an offense. Rape, no.

Sometimes legitimate protests attack national monuments.
A legitimate protest was when the one remaining pine tree on One Tree Hill was attacked. It was a legitimate protest because: The Pakehas (white people) planted pine trees over the grounds that was once a Maori village. 150 years ago the village atop the hill was attacked and quite a few Maori incl. women were killed and all the native totara trees that were on the hill were cut down by the white attackers. Later three pine trees were planted over the top.
Mike Smith (well, his organisation and he) got a 50k fine for chopping the remaining tree down.
It looks a bit of an eyesore, but hey, that's life.

I get the feeling Namdaemun was not quite aimed correctly. Was it a legitimate target? Was there a relationship between the gate and the council?

You punish hard what you don't want to happen again.

I think 10 years is fair, and anything less and it wouldn't be enough to keep people from pulling similar stunts.

Now in the case of rape or forced prostitution, I'd lock em up for life. Less than a year is idiotic.

If they had sentenced him the first time they arrested him for burning down historical building they would have never had this problem in the first place. The sentence is justified as it was not the first time he has been arrested for the arson of a historical site.
