Vietnam vs China: If you had to work in one, which would you choose?
And why? |

Aren't you going to Japan?
And you must be the only poster who consistently starts polls without ever giving a vote/opinion of your own. But I'll bite....
China: taught there for ten months. Crap pay. Food not all that it's made out to be.
Vietnam: only spent 10 days there. Great food, surprisingly good beer, and from what I can glean, good pay(relative to COL) IF you have a TEFL. Lots of scams/hassles/touts, though.
I'd pick VN. |

| Hong Kong is China now right? I had some friends making ridiculous amounts of money there. So I guess I say China. |

I am. And I am very happy to be doing so as well.
I'm in the Philippines right now, and the exposure to other countries is incredible compared to Korea. They have 7-8 cable channels devoted to China alone, not to mention the French, the Spanish, the Koreans, the Japanese, Arabic, India, etc. When I'm watching all the cool stuff on China, it makes me actually more curious about it. In Korea, you hear NOTHING about China, except that it's dirty and Koreans don't like it or them.
Anyways, watching all the cool stuff on Philippines TV, makes me think China is more interesting than I thought it was while I was in Korea.

As to this thread, I'd probably only seriously consider Shanghai or Beijing, and would only consider Saigon in Vietnam. I'd probably go with Shanghai first, Saigon second, and Beijing third. I doubt I'd seriously consider any other city in those countries outside of those three. |

The year is 2008. The choice must be China.
Enjoy it during the Olympics and before the economic crash. |

I've never been to Vietnam but have only heard positive things but those came from tourists not foreign teachers...
I worked in China for 2 years. It's chaotic and the people are ruthless. Very dirty. I'm a healthy person, never sick but while in China I always had a sore throat from the filthy air and raising my voice so 60 students could hear me at once. Chinese people's pastime is raising the bar of corruption. They'll try to swindle and cheat you at every opportunity. At one school they didn't pay me my last month because the principal needed the money for an abortion! Can you top that excuse?? I'll never work in China again...but I'm still fascinated with it and would go back as a tourist only. |

There are some good jobs there.
Where did you teach? What city/cities? |

I like Nam more a place to visit but doubt I could take living there--heat and beggars and othe nuisances might be too much.
Shanghai is a good calll but I'd take a lot of other cities over Beijing. Qingdao or Suzhou Dalian to name just 3. |

| I loved living in China. Find the culture fascinating even though these days you need to scratch beneath the surface. One of the cool thing about China these days is that people are taking back their culture when so much of the world is losing it. It really depends on what city you live in China though. Vietnam sounds pretty cool as well. |

China is a cool place to visit, live AND work....
Right now, there are some schools that are offering about 10,000rmb to start, depending on experience.....(thats about $1200US) and considering the cost of living minus the hassles, China is a good and safe bet....
I am in the same dilemma- I was offered jobs in VN that range from $1400 to $1600 a month including accomodations (accomodations could run about $400 to $500 for foreigner)....and there I said- for foreigners .....if you ever get a chance to read the VN forum, you will see tons of stories about Vietnamese charging double, triple and sometimes quadruple the prices locals pay for things, without a chance to negotiate.
However, I was offered a job at an international school in China, so if that job falls through I have Vietnam to fall back on......
I have someone who has the hook up on jobs in China, if you want to know more, PM me....

This is why I would never work in Vietnam and why I will never even visit there again. |

| A lot of info can be gleaned off Daves. Just in this one thread I've picked up a fair amount of meaningful info from the horse's mouth. |

| Just a note: It's important to remember that when mentioning "China", Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau should not enter into the equation. They are de facto independent entities. |

Not true- Hong Kong and Macau are special administrative regions. They are now part of China.
Taiwan depends on who you ask. |

Of course HK & Macau are SARs. I said they are DE FACTO independent entities. I wouldn't want a newb to get the impression that a teaching job on the mainland is comparable to one in Taiwan or HK.
If you think Macau, for example, is "part" of China...then obviously you've never had a two hour wait in immigration going from Zhuhai to Macau(or vice versa).
And did you say the Chinese are "taking back their culture"??!! Is that why the CCP knocked down all those old districts in Beijing for the Olympics? |
