So, if you're already in Korea, and you're changing jobs or whatever, you don't need your background check apostilled, right? You can just go to the U.S. embassy and sign an affadavit saying it's legit, right? That's what I've gathered from reading the recent update on the Immigration website and some other posts.

Anybody wanna chime in?

That's my understanding as well, from others on this Forum.
If you are a US citizen and are already in Korea, you can get your Criminal Background Check approved at the US Embassy by signing an affidavit attesting to it's authenticity.
The CBC must be from an official government office, either local, state or national (FBI). It can be an online check if it is from an official government source. Some states offer an online check and others do not. It cannot be from a private company such as backgroundchecks.com.
If anyone has new or different information, please respond.

My handler asked Dain Bae at GEPIK if an affidavit would be sufficient and she said NO. So I had to request a new CRC. The only problem is, many states will require a notarized signature if you're requesting one by mail. My state doesn't offer an online CRC unless you are a government agency making the request (like a school). I had to go to the US embassy to get my signature notarized on the request form, mail that to the US to get the CRC, have my parents get it apostilled and then send it back to Korea. The whole process should take less than a month...

does anyone know what the situation is if you're British and you are changing jobs while already in Korea. Do you need to get the background check apostilled?

I want to know this too. I already have the background check, but if I'm re-signing with the same school does it need to be apostilled? And if I need to do something with it, what is it?!

The "rules" keep changing all the time and they will probably change between now and the time your contract will expire.

That's off the immigration website. Seems a little ambiguous though. Who is the consul? The U.S. embassy?

Yes. The consul in Korea = your country's embassy or consulate in Korea. For Americans, that means the embassy in Seoul, as the "American Presence Post" in Busan is only open for consular services a few times a year.

What if you're transferring to another geographical area? I like my job, but I yearn for the beaches in Busan.
