Any ideas? Any ideas on costs?

Bad news.

There is NO cheap or easy way to do it.

It will be too big for the postal service and any other option will probably cost as much as or more than the guitar.

Best bet is to fly it home with you if you really want to keep it.

Cart it on a plane with you. I've taken home four guitars that way.

Do you take it as carry on or check it?

If you have loads of booty to check-in then carry it on.

If your axe is in a soft case, definitely haul it aboard with you and charm the prettiest air-stewardess to stow it for you.

If you have a hardcase and you aren't too perturbed about not shopping for/para la familia toda, then check-in luggage is fine.

Don't use AIR CANADA.

They busted the neck right off of mine last summer.

If you really figure you must, be sure to use a HARD SHELL CASE.

Remember to loosen the strings before embarkation. Check in as fragile, definitely no probs even with soft bag.

If I may suggest that you buy a top of the range guitar while in Daegu, so that there're no regrets down the line.

I had the same experience with Air Canada. I was told I could not carry it on because it was too large (but I did see others carrying their guitars around the airport as if they were taking them on the plane?) and so I checked it. A couple of weeks after I arrived home, they found my luggage...and sent a broken guitar to my doorstep.

Any idea if the type of guitar, acoustic or electric, has anything to do with whether or not they will allow a person to carry it on the plane?

Most airlines state that a guitar that is carried on should have a seat purchased for it. I know that people have got around that, but if you plan to carry on, be aware that they could ask you to pay for another seat.

I brought one of my guitars to Korea during a visit home a few months ago. I bought a hard case and packed under the neck with socks and padded the guitar with towels. It arrived in Korea safely, as it was oversized luggage and so did not have to go around the conveyor belts.

If the guitar is a cheap one, I would say ditch it, or sell it, and buy another cheapo when you get home - the cost (buying a new case) and the hassle of shipping it hardly seems worth it.

Is it a bolt-on electric? If so, remove the neck. The body and neck should fit in your suitcase.

It's a $150 guitar.... I've lost two $150 guitars because I didn't really care if they broke in check in luggage. I got lucky the first time and so tried twice again. Thai Air broke one and Air Canada broke the other. Though the one time one made it was with Air Canada.

Tips for having it survive in a soft shell case:

1. Take off the strings.
2. Stuff the inside with socks/underwear/whatever will fit.
3. Stuff the case with shirts/pants whatever will fit.

I did this the first time and I got all my socks and underwear and a few shirts across the world and the guitar survived (with the help of a big fat red fragile sticker).

If you want it broken - take it in a soft case.

I have had 2 guitars busted in a soft case by airlines, then I learnt my lesson and bought a hard case (which was only W60k) and no problems since.
