Yeah. He's an often overlooked member of the Stones who replaced Brian Jones. He contributed to some of my favourite Stones LPs including:
Let It Bleed ~ Monkey Man
Exile on Main Street ~ Turd on The Run |

How's about "Get ya yas out". Remarkable.
Charlie Watts has it on record that they did their best stuff when he was in the band.
The problem, according to Keefer, was that he was hard to work with.
With a band often on the road, that's a problem. |

| totally agree. mick taylor is the best lead guitarist they had, by a country mile. i saw them play a few years ago and it was a great gig but ronnie wood just can't play with the same fluidity and imagination. 'can't you hear me knocking' just wasn't the same. |

That's a great clip. It's worth a trawl through Youtube to find some of the older performances with Jones, Taylor, and Wood, and hearing their different styles. Each has their own merits.
This may interest some of you. I'm putting together a Rolling Stones tribute night, on May 3rd, at Freebird in Hongdae. There are 5 bands, all playing Stones tunes in their own inimitable style. All proceeds go to buy bikes for a local orphange.
Come on out and help get a kid a bike. Oh, and enjoy some great music from The Stones.

Yeah, it's nice isn't it. At about 04:57 in that video he just starts melting that Les Paul. Cool slide work also. I thnk he was like 18 or 19 wehn he joined the stones.
Hey, i think Ron Wood would be the first guy to admit that Mick was a better, more technical, melodic guitar player than either Keith or himself.
But it seems Keith found it tough to get along with Mick Taylor.
Cool clip here - rehearsal in 1972. And cool song. At about at 00:50 you can see Stu on piano behind Keith, and at 03:40 Mick Taylor breaks into the riff Shake Your Hips. Man, what is this that Taylor's playing? Those chord changes sound almost like a reggae song watiting to break out. Canada 72/73? Check out the bottle of Jack on the speaker Mick on lead again.
it was all down hill for the Stones after Mick Taylor left them. The clips above - 1968 to 1973 - are the without a doubt the best era of this band, in my opinion. |

Indeed, Mick Taylor is a god. The Stones have been my favorite band since high school (I have the tongue tattooed on my forearm), and Mick Taylor's lead is a big reason why. He blows my mind... lately that solo in "Sway" (the first one, especially) and his stuff on Exile has been killing me (though it always has).
Cool clips, also. Man I wish I could have seen them in their prime, though I guess that would make me like twenty years older... |

mick n keef didnt give him song writing credit or royalties on moonlight mile, cant you hear me knocking, time waits for no one.
stones at their best,i agree.
micks meaness and control junkiedom lost him taylor, and maybe another 2/3 albums of A+ stones prime.
Ronnie, bless his socks,is a clown, and keef n mick control him and treat him like a child(hes had his own drink drug hell last 20 yrs too, I have just finished reading his bio RON..not such a great read,by the way)
they went for ease of control/side kick Ron over Taylor quality.
if you actually isolate Rons playing,it sucks big time.hes quite good on slide, steel and country n western tho(eg.faraway eyes)
taylor seems a hurt and bitter man now, dont think he gets much dosh from the stones machine.
they should bring him back if ronnie kicks the bucket first.. though unlikly as hes a little younger than the others.
i think he might be involved with a possible Faces reunion,if the stones are not touring again soon. |
