Hi, I'm trying to find a job for January. I've contacted Julice's Korean jobs and everything seems honest and above board. I'd just like to see if anyone has first hand experience here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks.

Sigh. Just come to Korea and use a recruiter here. Seriously. There are jobs here. Screw them paying for your ticket. You want a good boss right? This is more important than your ticket. Once you're here you WILL find a job. Trust me.

Don't have money for a ticket? Get it, pay it back. Check out the school first. Holy cow; I'm S. African and I had job offers all over the place.

That's all I have to say. I'll even spell it...

S-A-Y.

Julice has a pretty bad reputation as a thread was going in recent days saying how bad that company was. Ditto BB's comments. If you want a good job come here and don't use a recruiter. They will tell you everything you want to hear just to get the money.

Actually, the evidence in that thread suggesting that she has a bad reputation was inconclusive.

Yeah, I have to say my friends have gone through a recruiter named Julice and all three have come up satidfied. Sure, I know. Three. Big deal. But I have yet to hear the "Julice is a dragon lady" story personally. May try her myself.

Julice has no qualms in pushing an ageist line.If you are over 40 don't waste your time dealing with this recruiter.
AGEISM = AN UNPROFESSIONAL APPROACH IN THE PROVISION ( ALBEIT, INDIRECTLY) OF EDUCATIONAL SERVICES .
Avoid Julice.

I've taken on a few parttime jobs through Julice.. never had any problem whatsoever.. basically they are just the imbetween for a school and for you..

So any problem would really be with the school itself.. everywhere they helped me, I had no problem.. they are just the connection.. the school or organization that wants you.. thats the questionable area.. you have to decipher their honesty, integrity before you take their position..

Again, Julice is in KwangJu i think? somewhere.. they aren't in Seoul or Busan or wherever else.. I *think* they just basically say 'okay we have these teachers looking.. at to the teachers.. 'hey we have these schools looking'.. okay, now you guys figure out if you are compatible type thing.. more or less..

Subject: Blacklisting a recruiter
Hi. I have a post that I was hoping you would add to your website hagwonreport.com. I have a recruiter that I want to blacklist. Below is a criticism of a recruiter that Ive recently been in contact with.

Written November 6th, 2003:
I e-mailed the recruiter Julice from the company Julice Ltd., and I asked her for my exact teaching schedule that I would be working at a school in Busan teaching adults. She e-mailed me back telling me that I would work from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. M, W, F. She also said I would work 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. T and Th. That adds up to 34 hours a week at school, but she said I would only get paid for 50 minute classes and not the full hour, so I would only be getting paid for 28.3 hours of it. That means I would only be getting paid for 83% of the time I would have to spend at school. Id be working 136 hours per month (16 hours of overtime (overtime is any time worked past 120 hours)), and Id only be getting paid for 113.2 hours of it. There are some more dubious things she told me. There are sometimes breaks between the classes. Well, I asked for my exact schedule, so why is she or the language school director telling me that there are sometimes breaks. Im not sure what the law says on this, but if Im only getting paid for 50 minutes, then I should be getting a ten minute break between each class all the time! Wouldnt you agree??? She also said, The class schedules will vary from month to month. and that I would usually teach 6 classes a day. I can do math, and the schedule she just sent me averages out to 6.8 classes per day. Thats definitely not 6! She also said, Although the contract says a teacher should buy a ticket to Korea, the school will prepay it. Well, if the school would really pay for the plane ticket over there, then why isnt it in the contract? Then she told me that she wanted a response from me by tomorrow, so we could get the visa processed in time for me to get over there by the end of this month.

I figure that if Im getting lied to, pressured, and misled this early in the ballgame, then I can only expect that it will get worse. This recruiter and this employer wont be getting any more of my time.

I read through the list. A few people saying that others have said she was bad, a guy noting an age accusation, a compliment, and our friend who was upset that she told him exactly what the job entailed.

I would suggest you purge the last one she told him exactly what was required (he walked into it expecting to be paid for time he wasn't teaching), and the ones saying "well, I heard that others didn't like her".

I've also read on the Internet that I'm an ass who ran away to Asia to stay out of debter's prison. I read it on the Internet, it must be true.

Orange Julius rocks though. That, and I miss malt shops.

I'm also a former teacher from that school, and I strongly agree with Walter Mitty. I don't think anything else needs to be said about the school.

On Julice, I found her to be a good recruiter. She's a very nice person, and is generally helpful if you have problems. She'll talk to the school if you have problems.

If you want to teach adults, you should look at ELS. They have more teachers, so you don't have to do the split shift so much if at all. They have a pretty professional reputation and you'll have a foreigner as a supervisor which is probably a plus in most cases. Direct English is also supposed to be decent, including the one in Bundang.

Why would he want to purge it? People can read the post and make up their own minds about it, just like you did.

The first few were people saying "I saw some messages from people complaining about that recruiter" yet the huge archieve of Lost Seoul doesn't have it. It shouldn't be there in any fashion. Maybe such messages did exist, maybe they didn't.

The guy complaing about the "oh, she lied, not being paid for time worked" was so completely wrong in his statements that he went and deleted all his messages already. As such, why save it when even he has gone on to admit that it was a complete mistake to post?

If someone has first hand stories of "oh, she screwed me over" then so be it. But to post the examples I gave is not something that should happen.

I agree. That one post in question, the OP went ahead and deleted his comments, effectively retracting his complaint about the recruiter. Yet, his original complaints are being resurrected on this thread.

It's bad enough that jobseekers have to sort through all sorts of hearsay and subjective and biased opinions, now we throw more gas on the fire of misinformation by posting complaints that have since been retracted by the OP?

That's not helping anybody.

I was sent a PM by the poster requesting me to post his/her experience with Julice on my website, I have not, however, recieved another message from him/her saying he/she wishes to retract his/her statement. I've sent a him a PM back asking him/her if they want me to retract the report, if he/she does I will delete it from my archives and my site.

I've never claimed that the lists I hold are to be taken as gospel they are merely comprehensive listings, you have to sift through and decide for yourself who you wish to believe.

Here is an example of how Julice works:

In the spring of 2000, I was a noob and didn't know much. I came to a hakwan near Pusan that was in the process of going bellyup. By the end of the summer, I was desperate to find a new job FAST! To make a long story short, I put an ad on the internet and Julice contacted me. They told me they would meet me on really short notice at the bus station at Dong-ne in Pusan--which was a 45 minute bus trip from where I was.

The job was for a private Christian College and they would take me there for the interview. I arrived at the station and waited by the McDonald's as I said I would. I waited for 3 hours in the pouring rain, and all of their phones mysteriously had busy signals. The upshot was that I came at a run to the bus station, spent hours there and could NOT contact them.

What I found out later was that some guy walked in their door shortly after I called and agreed to meet them. Immediately, having a warm body in hand, they blew me off and took the phones off the hook. They went to the interview with this guy and he got the job. What we both didn't know at the time wa that it was some wierd fascist Christian school where you aren't even allowed to wear blue jeans.

This guy paid 1/3 of his first month's salary, plus the college paid a fee, and he lasted the first month, got paid and left Korea because the conditions were so bad.

This is the kind of shit you can expect form these bitches. The ESL scene in Korea is full of parasites and bad people. Julice is one of the bigger parasites who is able to put on a good face for those new and not too well informed about what's going on. Avoid them like you would the plague!
