My school has asked me to teach a couple of extra classes every week. It is a group of 25 3rd to 6th grade students out in the country. The pay is really good if I keep it at 2 classes per week but I also have the option of breaking the class into smaller groups of 3rd plus 4th graders and 5th plus 6th graders. This would make my load 4 classes per week instead of 2 and I would still get the same pay. Here's the question:

Would it be possible to develop a lesson that I could teach to 25 kids ranging from 3rd to 6th grade or will it be necessary to break them up? 2 more classes I can handle but 4 would be cutting into my free time.

Thanks,

Considering a good third grade student probably knows more English than a poor sixth grade, you'd be an idiot to double your work load for no extra pay.

That's the response I was hoping for. I teach Middle School so I have no frame of reference with elementary kids.

Last year I had your situation. Grades 3,4,5,6 mixed. There were 20 students tho the numbers fluctuated all year.

Problem was some of the slow grade 3.4 students ended up being left clueless while the fast action centered around dedicated peers and willing grade 5,6ers. Those left out 3,4'ers were long gone most of the time and there was no way to fix that.

Except a student 'student-teacher program'. Seat a sharp student beside one in dreamland to 'tutor' them during class, encourage them to move their lips and speak, etc. They look after the slower student like a little brother or sister.

I like that idea. I'm worried about creating a lesson that would leave the youngest learners in he dust. The buddy system might work perfectly.
