I'm a newly arrived SMOE teacher, and as the weeks go by, I see myself having more and more free time once I perfect lesson planning. So I'd like to try get 2-3 graduate courses done throughout the next 12 months instead of killing time b/w here smoeworld and facebook. Any reasonably cheap on line programs that would let me take a course at a time? I'm not looking for a full program, just a place to get some credits. I have not taken the GRE but I did minor in applied linguistics. Any help would be great. Thanks. |

I have seen a lot of foreign teachers come to Korea: work, party, travel, study ... think they can do it all and then burn-out in a heap and don't make it through 1 year, let alone more.
Work and study is hard to juggle. You have to way it up as to whether it will impact your quality of life in a negative way. |

However no one actually answered the question.
I've seen a few online programs, but they aren't that cheap. $16,000USD is about average for what I've seen.
As a GEPIK teacher, I must sit here in the office from 8a-4p, and only teach 18 lessons (45min) a week. That leaves a lot of time to pick ones nose, scratch ones arse, and build a wonderous homepage... or something less productive like getting a masters degree. |

That would certainly be likely if I was at a hagwon, but alas I am not. As I'm with SMOE, I work at 8:30 every day, ergo I only party on the weekend. Further ergo, I have about 15 down hours a week in front of a computer and I'd like to make the most of it. Also, I don't think 3 graduate classes in a field I minored in over teh course of 12 months will break my brain. But, I do appreciate the caveat. |

If you have at least 2 years' teaching experience check out Victoria University of Wellington's MATESOL programme. Some of the professors at Vic's linguistics department are world leaders in their fields. It ain't the cheapest, but you gets what you pays for, innit? You could surely cross credit from Vic' to other schools if and when you decide to study a full-time programme somewhere else later on.

BTW - online degree sounds flakey, distance learning is a better term, don't you think? |

Yeah that's too much, and too far way in terms of time. I already have a minor in it, I don't see how two years at SMOE will prepare me any further to take one graduate course in sociolinguistics. Thanks for the link though. |

jkelly, I like your idea, SMOE teachers do have a lot of downtime. I don't know about places to go, but an in-class MA, not an online one, will benefit you more in the future. You may want to do some research to find out if any in-class MA programs will accept credit from other courses like many undergrad programs do. Just a thought. |

I know the MA program I'm enrolling in (in the United States) hates taking credits from other Universities, but I guess it depends. I also plan to take MA coursework in Korea, but classes I know I won't have too hard a time in.
My sister takes online classes, but she's teaching in Indonesia. She simply schedules classes from her MA program that were offered online. That could also be an option. It's probably harder since jkelly80 is in Korea, though. |

It is not a sociolinguistics programme, it is MATESOL by course work. You can study on campus or by distance via blackboard. |

That was just an example. I'm sure its a quality program, but sometimes I feel like the two year exp. clause doesn't really serve a great purpose, especially if one just wanted to take a few courses here and there. |

If you don't have a lot of teaching experience, you will have a problem finding an MATESOL programme to join. Perhaps you should think about taking a TESOL/TEFL course to begin with (if you haven't already), rather than a couple of MA courses.
You won't be able to cross credit the TESOL/TEFL 'credits' but you will get a good background in the field. Good luck! |

I was considering something like that, but then I wondered if it was worth it, and what I would do with it.
I work with two folks who have Masters in linguistics...they have the same exact job as I do, and they get paid a whole 100,000W/mon. more than me. |

Ugh. That sounds very not worth it. Definitely not worth it as far as SMOE as concerned w/ their payscale, seeing how long it would take me. Not going to be here for that many years, I'm pretty sure.
If worse comes to worse I'll look into U Phoenix. Probably not going to finish, but showing some coursework might help if I can make a Uni contact. Also, summers are going to be boring as crap, so I'll need something to do, and it's 600 US per class, so I don't think I'm out much. The illusion of being productive is very important to me as well.

Yeah, long term online is probably not the way I'd like to go, but for the short term, a few classes would probably help me with my classes anyway, and maybe with padding the ol' resume. But you're right, I'd prefer in-class, all things being equal. If it's cheap, I figure, why not? I'll need something to do when my ***hole principal makes me come in every day during summer break.
