I recently got a phone at LG and I wanted to make a post about it for people that are looking to do the same thing.
I went to the LG Phone and Fun store near Gangnam Station exit 6. An employee immediately approached me and asked for my ARC. He showed me the cheapest phone for "Americans" (I don't know what that was all about).
Gave him my bank book. Sat down and filled out the contract.
I paid 50,000 for a new, nice Cyon slide phone. I pay 11, 900 a month for service. It's a one year contract.
Easy and simple. They speak English well there. Literally, it took 15 minutes. |

I had the same experience, except I was stopped when he looked at my ARC. I was told I need to have more than 6months left on my visa (I was on 5 months 24 days at the time). Was told the same thing at 3 different LG shops.
Glad it worked out Molly~!~ |

No deposit is required as long as you show your ARC. In my case, I had to pay a $30 activation fee but they will break it up over the course of 3 billing cycles if you wish. |

Yeah me too,
was nice and easy,
$180 for phone
$30 activation fee
$12 Monthly charge
10 cents a minute rate
Only difficulty is that you need a bank account created with an ARC card, not your passport.
My phone has a TV inside it, I'll be damned if I understand how that works.... |

Its great to see that the barriers to get cell phones are coming down. I think every foreigner coming in now is going to use LG. Why not? They even have an all English bill.
Hopefully, SK and KTF will come around too. |

A side note question. I've had my LG phone in my name for over two years. I'm wondering how I would go about upgrading my phone? Would I be entitled to a free upgrade? In Canada, you get a new phone every two years usually for free or for very cheap.
I keep getting told that to get a new phone at a good price I would have to get a new number which I'm not very keen on as that's the number I've been giving out for 2.5 years, and it's the also the number on my business cards.
Thanks for any help!

Yes. Although if you'r going from prepaid to monthly pay, or even vice versa, I'm not so sure about that. |

I have never been on prepaid..
I always just had the bill sent to me monthly from KT and they took the money from my bank account each month..
BTW: I finally discovered what you avatar is - I watched "Clockwork Orange" last night - but found the movie a bit strange... |

I think you may have overpaid for your phone (though I don't know what you bought). They gave me this phone for 20 bucks! The model is SPH C3250. I traded in my old phone, though. It was a piece of crap.

There is no question that LG has been trying much harder than other telecomms to accommodate the foreigner market. I am very pleased with my phone and the service, so far. I got a similar deal to what others have reported, $13 a month, 10 cents a minute, $30 activation. It's a no-brainer. English customer service is also very good on the two times I have contacted them.

| 12,000 a month? How many minutes do you have? I pay $30 a month for 200 anytime minutes (LG). I paid 30,000 for a used Cyon slider phone. |

Stanley Kubrick was an artist and a genius. Although I can understand why some would find the character of Alex a strange choice for an avatar. Brilliant movie.
Back to the topic, kind of. I used to have LG years ago and had occasional trouble with the reception. I'm on SKT now but I want to change phones and I'm considering going back to LG.
Has anyone had problems with LG reception or anything else about their service? |

The only 2 places I have experienced any reception problems (LG-019) in the last few years was in the elevator of our building and once in a backwater valley tucked between 2 mountains in rural Kangwondo.
I have had NO PROBLEM in Seoul or Gyeonggi province with reception and I have always found the customer service to be more than adequate and ALWAYS better than my wife has experienced (she is on KTF).
