Just wondering which city would be best for a newbie looking for the following :

1)Nightlife- I'm in my early twenties so would like some sort of nightlife, doesn't have to be the best, but something for my age. I'm more of a pub person but would like to clubing once or twice a month.

2)Football/soccer I'd also like to play football/soccer. Would either area have an ex-pat teams or would the local football clubs be open to a foreigner joining?

3) Gyms- would any gyms offer the chance to do something like Muay Thai, Boxing or Hapkido.

4) Locals- Generelly speaking, which area is more open/friendly to foreigners?

5) Which area would leave opportunity for better savings?

For nightlife and football, then its gwangju. Gyms are much the same everywhere in Korea, though you can find some of better standards. Saving will depend on your nightlife and shopping needs. Your cities are donw south. Nice people there, but not what you would say welcoming. Anyways find your nich and you will do fine.

Goeje has a large expat population due to the ship building industry there. On the many trips my wife and I made to Goeje we met plenty of expats that were involved in a vast rage of sporting activities. There a bigger places such as Gwangju or even Yoesu. Suncheon is also a pretty good area. Smile

If it's football you be looking for, I believe Gwangju is the only one with a foreigner footy team. I could be wrong however. Although I'm wondering how welcome you would be with a handle like Totti Wink

Gwangju is a good bet, and Suncheon would probably be your second best bet. Suncheon has soccer going on every weekend.. they sometimes play the Gwangju team but usually they play against Korean teams.

Suncheon has 2 'pub' style bars (Elvis and Julianas) which you could quickly become comfortable in..

Gwangju has Dave and Mike's Speakeasy which is a foreigner run pub-ish bar. (I might have got the two names wrong there..) which has live music pretty much every weekend. Gwangju is a good sized city with lots of stuff going on. A bunch of hiphop clubs there too..

Both Gwangju and Suncheon have nice countryside outside of the builtup areas.

Yeosu is more laid back. No real foreigner bar, no clubs, not so many foreigners as the other cities. It does have beaches though.

Haha! I think every team needs a player who is 'clever' in the box Wink

Thanks for the info!

I'm planning on comming during June so still have abit of time to decide. I think Gwangju may be best for me to start off with. I'm guessing rock/alternative clubs are limited to Seoul?

Yeosu's nice enough. There's nice countryside with lots of good cycling and hiking options and I've generally found the locals to be very friendly. The nightlife is a bit crap but I'm not really into nightclubs and so on so it doesn't bother me.

There is one bar called "Elluei" that always has a few dozen English teachers and the odd engineer hanging out there, and nearby is a nightclub that seems pretty welcoming to foreigners.

There is another nightclub locally that won't let foreigners in (due to some expats causing trouble there in the past) but I've heard it's not the greatest anyway, and if you go with Korean friends the management can sometimes be a little more accomodating.

Being 5 hours and 30,000won away from Seoul is a bit of a drawback however. That sucks when you need to buy foreign toothpaste in preparation for the anti Grand Canal peace march and candlelight vigil on the 30th of March, starting in front of Seoul Station at 3pm.

It looks like I'm going to be moving to Okpo in Geoje. Should be interesting!

Anybody else going to be in that area from June?

I just received an offer for Okpo and am probably going to take it. That would put me in Geoje in mid-late may. Want to meet up for kimchee and complain about it?
