i'm back in the states right now and i'm thinking about getting a new laptop before heading back to korea. i've been pricing dell laptops, specifically the xps m1330 and it seems to be cheaper on the dell korea website. configured the way i want it seems to cost $2000us with the instant rebates, but from dell korea it seems to cost 1.7 mil won with no coupons or anything
now, i can't read korea, so i'm not sure if they're configured the same. but i thought that laptops are cheaper if i get them from back home, is that still true or not any longer since the won took a bit of a dive against the dollar.
the specs i priced are:
core 2 duo,2.5 t9300
vista home premium
4gb ram
128 video card
200gb 7200rpm hd
13.3 backlit lcd |

I just priced it out for you and got 1,720,400 KRW for the configuration you listed.
A couple of things though...Don't get the 200GB. It's a waste. Get the 160G/7200 for $125 less. Get a 500GB external once you're here for the same price, or a smaller portable drive if you need it.
Is the backlit display really worth an extra $115? I don't know because I've not seen it, but seems kind of high for something that sounds like eye candy.
If you got rid of those two things, you could get the whole system for 1,480,600KRW.

I've been thinking about getting a similar model, too. Does anyone have any experience with Dell's Korean after service? I'm wondering how reliable it is.
Also, 5400 rpm vs 7200 rpm hard drives. I haven't seen anything definative about which is better. Any opinions?
Finally, does anyone know of any good korean sites for buying a laptop online? I'd like to know all my options before I make my decision. |

Dell's service in Korea is excellent. They have to be, or they wouldn't make it here. Too much competition.
My wife had her Dell fixed, and she had a 1 or 2 year service plan (can't remember which). They came out the same day and fixed it on-site. Replaced a DVD drive no charge. We're not sure if she bought an extra on-site service or not. I think it was a promotion at the time. Check what is offered.
For posterity sake, entry-level laptops are generally much cheaper in the USA. Upper Mid-level and high-level laptops can go either way. You have to search the make/model you want. |
