I have gave up reading it half way through. Is this guy married to a korean? He has to be. I can't believe the generalizations this guy made in the second paragraph. What an ass. Of course everything has to be the teachers fault. What an apologist for an incompetently run industry.

Nope. He blames "Western businessmen" too this time.
From the comments section (I really liked this):
Quote: |
Steven "thiessen" rails against modernatization, while complaing about "crap" from other teachers. Pick one topic. Looks like you are an aging teacher who can't score w/ the students like you used to. BTW, Korea is a male-dom confusian culture...its a fact. Your western-guilt self-loathing must make you a lot of "fun" at parties...fortunately, you aren't invited. |
And yet, full disclosure laws require me to sheepishly confess I rather agreed with ol' Steve-o when he says:
Quote: |
Examples of this indoctrination are native English teachers in hagwon (private language institutes) and universities "advising" Korean women on how to leave their husband or boyfriend, to English teachers who brazenly bring feminist writings, revolutionist literature, and material which openly advocates radical social change... |
Not that I've personally ever been "stung" by a Western femi-nazism-fed uppity K-gal, or what have you, but I can appreciate the general nuance here.

I cut and pasted this from the current events forum.... it should never have been moved there. This is what I said in that forum
Another poorly thought out and disconnected article from the "Loser" Steve Schertzer.
This guy is not your fellow ex-pat. He is a person with an agenda. What it is I will never know. Read his past articles and you will soon get what I mean. I pity Steve, I really honestly pity him.
Since when was the last time you advocated for social change in a classroom of middle school students. I spend my time just trying to get them to learn more than the basics covered in the textbooks.
I teach at a great above average girls middle school. Saying things like "Girls, marry for money and don't get knocked up by just any guy" really wouldn't be understood or condoned. I wonder what imaginary universe Mr. Schertzer is living in.
Excuse me, but university professors are allowed to give the students some thoughts to chew on. It is university after all. It's called vocabulary building and rational thought processes, hopefully coming out in some sort of English.
Steve Schertzer prides himself as being the most hated EFL teacher in Korea amongst the ESL teaching community.
BTW, I wonder why he doesn't publish his thoughts on the Palestinian State. |

Does he insinuate that hagwan teachers are the Big Macs, Supersized fries and and large Pepsis of the ESL biz? |

I wouldn't bother with rebuttals to the Korea Times. Nobody of consequence reads any of the local "E-rags".

That's unbelievable. I've never heard of this guy before but it seems like he has a reputation for these kinds of stories. |

That's awesome! A Korean Immigration Officer's wet dream, that is.
Damn flunky, hipster, doofus Western no-hopers coming into Corea and trying to change it with their wicked ways.
I'm just glad he's writing as the dude's got issues and if it were for writing, I'd shudder to think of what he'd be doing.
He looks like a postal worker with too much time on his hands and an axe to grind. |

Something tells me this guy's world will eventually blow up on him and he will end up being another ESL poster boy. Something obviously isn't right with him on the surface and I hate to imagine what else he is up to that he doesn't let the rest of the world see. That fact that the Korean media has latched onto him should be enough of an indication that something is very wrong. |

Funny thing about Steve.
A discussion comes about on pusanweb, where he is thoroughly made to look like an idiot.
http://www.koreabridge.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5909
Then, not knowing how utterly gormless he looks, he goes crying to a Korean newspaper extolling his own virtues and attempting to deride the very people who are trying to "learn him up" something.
At some point in time, this guy either has to grow a brain, or STFU.
This quote is particularly telling. From Ktimes:
Quote: |
Like the U.S. government, which unabashedly send troops to different nations to spread democracy, many native English teachers here shamelessly indoctrinate Korean children and adults (especially girls and women), into the Western point-of-view by bringing into the classroom ideas and modes of behavior that should be considered out-of-bounds for a native English teacher in a foreign country.
Examples of this indoctrination are native English teachers in hagwon (private language institutes) and universities ``advising'' Korean women on how to leave their husband or boyfriend, to English teachers who brazenly bring feminist writings, revolutionist literature, and material which openly advocates radical social change into a public school classroom with the intention of disseminating this to impressionable 13 and 14 year old boys and girls. |
From the OP of the p-web article and how ss magically misunderstands things, SO COMPLETELY it baffles the mind that anyone would want to associate with him:
Quote: |
I teach at a girls' middle school and the girls are suffering from serious cases of body shame, always talking about being too fat and ugly and how you need surgery to get ahead and all that crap. Several of them have been compelled to get surgery by their parents already and AREN'T happy about it. Just imagine: "honey, you're ugly, we're going to get you fixed"... from your PARENTS!
.....I've got an afterschool class and it occured to me that it might be interesting to pursue this line of study with them. So I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone know about any "feminist" TEFL resources out there? It'd be nice to teach these girls how to talk about themselves without using the words "fat," "ugly," "surgery," or "boyfriend." |
Note "feminist" is in speech marks to note a very loose usage of the word.
Now, SS's reasoned approach to dealing with this? It's actually funny.....well, if it was Satire.
Quote: |
First, Western feminism is the LAST thing Korean women need, (or want for that matter.) Any slender Korean woman who looks at a 120 kilo American woman thinks, "Who the hell wants to look like that?" Forget the fact that the 120 kilo American woman probably drinks, smokes, and swears like any GI in Iraq.
...
So stop importing and imposing your ideas about how Korean women/girls should live their lives. They have parents and teachers for that. ..... [and just for creepy good measure] If you really want to do your "girls" a favor, teach them, love them, compliment them, value them, cherish them....[because their parents sure as shit don't if they're making them get surgery]
|
Somewhere on p-web, a poster collected a FANTASTIC series of musing from the reigning king of ESL in Korea.
Here it is.
It starts on post 26.
