I don't have dreadlocks but its long and blond. i wear it up with a chopstick/paintbrush/whatever so you can't actually tell it's that long. i do look a bit different though.

how is this going to be viewed by employers?

are there many men with long hair teaching english there?

while i'm on the subject of hair - what about beards? i keep a well trimmed one normally. i can lose this if need be but the hair on top stays.

There are guys here with long hair. I work with one that has hair down to his shoulders.

I've also had a trimmed beard on and off throughout my time here. The kids will tease you sometimes, but it never interfered with my job.

I have always had a beard of one sort or another.

Some seasons it is well trimmed goatee and mustache.
Other seasons it becomes a full beard that would make Grizzly Adams proud.

It has never been a problem (other than some co-workers suggesting that I look OLD when I have a full beard).

My hair has always been above the collar so I can't give you first hand anecdotal evidence about having long hair.

I have a beard and a shaved head. But my dress sense is smart/casual. I've had no problems.

You will probably get more good natured curiousity about the hair on your arms.

I had a beard for most of last year. I had it when they told me that my students were scared of me, which they weren't, but that goes to show that I was working for dishonest people.

As for long hair, hard core Koreans think that men with long hair are immature, but then again, listen to the way they whine when they talk to each other. As long as your boss isn't offended by it, do what you wish.

I've got long hair, and some of my kids think I look like a girl. Conversely, Korean girls (the adult kind) seem to like it. And my boss never complains.

ok

did anyone have long hair or a beard BEFORE they started. i.e. their application included a photo of them with said hair. or does anybody know of anyone who got a job or who had problems getting a job because of their hair?

if it grows while working theres not much they can do about it really.

i'm about to apply and i know a lot can depend on appearances.

I got hired with a 'stache and goatee. Not excessive though. More like form fitting.

Since Chong Wah Day accepted someone for an E-7 Visa who's half-educated and has about, one should reckon, 150-200 open sores on her body and hates ideas and the philosophically-minded intellectuals one finds so often running about Great George Street, Grafton St., Quinnpool Rd, and Rue Demaissoneuve (sp?) outside the gates of Concordia University, then you're in like Flynn (sorry Aussies).

A white guy with long hair is considered odd, but this is considered cool?

It depends a bit on what type of institution you're at. At a rural high school, for instance, it would probably be a much bigger deal than at an urban children's academy. At most places a neat pony-tail is acceptable. If you want a beard, show up for the first day with it - don't try growing one after you start work. You'll be better off creating the impression that that's just the way you look than trying to change the impression of how you look after starting work.
