Iv been here for about 3 weeks now, hagwon. Iv always been on time, always smiled and been friendly. Trying to keep under the radar of everyone, yet also on their good sides. I have noticed, and been told by other employees that the director is a cheeky cow who shouts at all the staff. I even saw this last week. I didnt get any curtains in my room and didnt know the first thing about getting any, last week I asked for some and they arrived. I was shown the curtains on friday which were too large, ie they dangle into the sink and frying pan. I said at the time and the director grabbed them off me and threw them into the bag, speaking in an aggressive tone- she only speak korean. On monday she asked if they were too big and i said yes, she said to take them to school the next day so she could fix them, which i did. This morning when i gave them to her she went off on one, shouting and pointing at me in korean. the other english teacher (also korean) had to appologise for her behaviour (not with permission from the director), saying she needs to know exactly how much to cut off the curtain.
I know many directors need a brain transplant in this country, and one has to be very tough skinned in this profession, though if i was in uk and an employer spoke to me like that over a trivial issue i would demand an appology.

Granted shes a cow to everyone, and i shouldnt get angry about it, but should I brush it off, or should i nip her shite in the bud and have someone explain to her that she was out of order and that i, as an employee new to the country doing the best i can, should not be subjected to this. If i show i have balls and dont take shit would it show im not prepared to take it in the future, or would it be a big mistake, seeing as it seems to be normal here.

Yip stand up to her now dude.

Me I would go out and buy new curtains and hang them myself. Better still buy a bed sheet and make it yourself. So when she comes back with the curtains tell her you have taken care of business. She will lose face and respect you for standing up for yourself.

In Korea your boss is God. You are the employee and are therefore expected to take whatever your boss dishes out. The questions is do you want to be a good employee or a bad employee. I have always been a bad employee because I don't take crap from my bosses. This is very stressful. Being a good employee is much easier. When your boss yells just nod your head, say yes and then forget about it. The route of the good employee is much easier, however you will have to swallow your pride sometimes. I can't do that so I have had some rough experiences here. How you react to your boss should be carefully thought out. Once you cross your boss it is tough to get back in the good employee book.

If I were you I'd have made my own curtains. Of course, they'd look like shit. At the last place the sliding glass verandah doors I 'curtained' using a blue plastic tarp truckers cover their flatbeds with. Hung on a bamboo pole I cut across the river.

The tarp was twenty bucks at the hardware store. As a curtain very industrial looking.

I know, 'congratulations'.

Your bitch cow boss was probably just muttering about how you need 'everything' done for you. Moooooooooooooo. Just to piss her off why not ask her to crochet you an ornamental Kleenex box cover? Together you could accessorize the whole apt. Boss could sit for her portrait which she would be shocked to see is that of a bitch cow.

Stupid yellow curtans they have don't block sun much at all, anyway. I bought a big black blanket in Itaewon for 20,000 and tacked that up over the window. Worked great.

If she pays everything on time, tax, insurance etc then just go with the flow. Get payslips each month and make sure stuff is being paid. If a couple of month down the line there's problems with this then you have proof.

You meet shitty employers everywhere not just in Korea. Be a bit stronger and have a thick skin to it and stick up for yourself.

You might try bringing a bag of fruit or something as a show of appreciation for the effort, and see where that goes.

I'm willing to put up with stuff like that as long as I'm getting paid what I'm owed. Having a director that outright hates you isn't a good idea since you'll need to depend on them for things. It sounds like the director was annoyed at best but doesn't hate you yet so not that big of a deal.
