Does anyone know good sources for finding a private tutor in Korean? What are the going rates? I have heard rates of KRW 70,000 per hour, but the budget for the project would be more like 25,000-35,000 KRW/hour.
Can a Korean tutor be had for this price?
Any helpful advice would be most appreciated.

70,000 won an hour?! THAT'S RIDICULOUS! This country has 49 million Koreans, I know you can get a good, qualified teacher for less than that. Even with mere thousands of native English speakers and a massive demand for English instruction, English tutors only make around 40,000 won an hour (although no doubt some braggers will come forth and say otherwise). So 70,000 won per hour for a native Korean Korean teacher is UTTERLY LUDICROUS.
I have never used a private tutor for learning Korean. I just went to Yonsei University's program (I'm in Level 6 right now), and a private tutor isn't really necessary anymore since I can understand most normal, non-tutor's descriptions of things just fine, and therefore a free language exchange does the job just fine.

If you go there, that's Ganada's site. They're a hagwon that teaches Korean pretty well, apparently. My friend got pretty much fluent by going there. They offer tutoring. You can get a tutor for 32,000 won an hour. This may seem expensive, but we're not just talking about some Korean off the street here, we're talking about a Ganada instructor. |

Your AVERAGE Korean hakwon teacher gets about 10k per hour.
Many of them will exchange English time for Korean lessons (at no cost) or you can hire them without language exchange for 12-15k for private lessons (plus the cost of the books).
Korean lessons in a hakwon cost about 80-120k per month (3-5 hours per week). |

Yeah, it's incredibly easy to find language exchanges, and I bet you could even find one with a qualified Korean language teacher (or one in training). I put just two signs up -- one in Ewha Women's University and one in Yonsei University. I got seven replies. If you're a native English speaker, you definitely hold the upper hand.
If you're intermediate or above, I recommend you just do free language exchanges. Tutors will probably only be helpful with the fundamentals that most ordinary Koreans can't explain. If you want a good tutor, I'm sure the Ganada ones are probably some of the best available, but I've never used a tutor (instead going the language school/living with Koreans route) and I'm now eligible to enter university here and study all in Korean. After the intermediate level, most questions you have can be covered by pretty much anyone. On the other hand, if you have absolutely no budget restrictions and want to set the land speed record on learning Korean, a QUALIFIED tutor is definitely your best bet. |
