Believe me - the wangjangnim would rather not do it, but seeing that the racist housing policies in SK are far worse than in Japan - there's a reason that they "look after you."

As someone who has rented their own place in Korea before on multiple occasions, I have no idea what you are talking about.

what about those prepaid mobile phones? they dont usually need registration. usually crap phones too with high outgoing call rates, but you want it for incoming calls about jobs working with 18 year old japanese models, right?

phone rentals from the airport?

Phone problem solved. Bought a used land line off a guy who is leaving. Had my landlord put it in his name. More costs...

    3 nights in a cheap hotel - 12,000 yen
3 months key money for apartment (one month returnable) - 96,000 yen
First 20 days of rent (moved in on the 10th, 20 days until rent collection) - 21,000 yen
Required apartment insurance - 6,000 yen
Deposit for gas company - 10,000 yen
Four days at about 3,000 yen per day living, traveling, job hunting costs - 12,000 yen
Bed and bathroom stuff (sheets, towels etc.) - 20,000 yen
Kitchen stuff (cleaning supplies, plus pots etc) - 5,000 yen
Another four days of living (reduced my costs here quite alot...see below) - 8,000 yen
Phone line and telephone - 5,000 yen
Basic furniture, tv, and gas range - 12,000 yen
    Total - 286,000 yen

So Ive spent 286,000 yen in one week, but Im settled and wont have to spend more until I get a job. I also found a place where I can use the internet for free for 30 minutes, so that takes care of the 500 yen internet cafe costs. Heres a breakdown of my daily costs...

Train to and from downtown (I buy the tickets in bulk to save 40 yen per) - 200 yen each way, 400 yen total
Newspaper to keep myslef occupied - 150 yen
Coffee because I cant read a newspaper without it - 350 yen
Food (ramen for 150 yen at least once a day) - 700 yen
Additional costs (other transport, trip to Kinkos etc.) - about 400 yen
Total of about 2,000 yen a day

Not doing to bad I think.

Thanks for the background. Actually its quite good because seems like its pretty fair start-up costs. Whenever I've gone back to the States.. it takes quite a lot of money to get all situated and setup as well. Kind of a good realistic picture you have going there.

From here on out.. seems like you're all setup. Hope your having fun with the girl you are with as well!!

In addition, I just emailed an old co-worker who I seldom correspond with or talk to. Seems like he made his way to Fukuoka and been there a good year and half already. If he can find something, I'm sure you'd be able to.

Looks like Beckerson might be behind you Wink I have about a 25% chance of Fukuoka as well.. if not in April.. then a year or two down the road. Its been on the list for awhile anyhow.. hard to say but looking forward to the updates..

Keep us informed..

Oh, I forgot to ask: did you need a guarantor to rent the apartment? I've read that you usually do in Japan, and that it makes it hard to get one on your own (ie, without an employer)...maybe since your landlord is so foreigner-friendly you got by without one..?

Nope, didnt need one. I had to pay an extra months key money up front though. I think I got very lucky with my landlord....
Ive seen ads in the paper for places in tokyo where you dont need a guarantor, key money etc, but the monthly rent is so big (80,000 yen +) that it wouldnt be worth it in the end.

Well, an hour of internet costs me 500 yen, so my costs are rising as I type.

Get a computer quick! SHeesh, didn't realize it was quite that expensive.. (5000 won/hr)..

Can't wait until you get settled.. and also quite curious how you find day-to-day living in Fukuoka.. wether or not it seems worth going out (due to costs or even if its interesting to go out) and all the rest..

Granted its probably not good at this moment.. but once you get settled.. good luck on the job search.. recall somewhere you had 2 different interviews..

Got a job. Asssaaaa.
So it took me two weeks and about 300,000 yen to do this. Not bad at all. I wasnt picky about my job...took the first on I was offered. Will have that work visa within the week...at least thats what ive been told...

I havent had the money to go out at all so Ive been a bit of a hermit. Been reading all those thick Dickens novels... I plan on going out next week before my job starts. Ive met a lot of great Japanese people and am thrilled to have conversations that dont revolve around my age, nationality, and Bushi. Met a guy the other day on the train who spoke very broken english but managed to tell me his life dream, all about his family, and then he offered to help me find a job. Wonderful people.
