|
|
I'm thinking of opening an account with Nonghyup Bank, as I keep having trouble with my KEB account and the closest branch is a 30-minute bus ride away now that I've moved. If anyone who banks with NH can answer my questions, I'd be much obliged.
First, how's their overseas wire transfer ("remittance") service?- Can you register your overseas account info with them so you don't have to fill it out every time you make a transfer?
- Can you do an overseas wire transfer from an ATM once you register your overseas account info?
Second, Internet banking:- Do they offer it? If so, is there an English version?
- Does it require you to install six hundred ActiveX controls before it will work?
- Can you use it to send money overseas after registering your overseas account info with the bank?

Wire transfers are easy. I've been sending money back to the UK for the past 7-months with no problems. Takes about 30/40-minutes the first time and then about 10 thereafter.
I've just signed up for internet banking with them so that I can dispense with trudging into the bank once a month. I didn't manage to set it up myself, but when I went back to ask them what the problem was (my browser is Firefox, which I think doesn't work with their internet banking system) one of the girls there took me to a PC and did it for me. |

It seems that many Korean pages dont work with Firefox. It seems to have such little use by Koreans that no page builder make any attempt to see that it works.

Korean websites are also notorious for their use of ActiveX controls, which of course only work in Microslop Internet Exploder. This contributed to Korea's slow adoption of Vista, as the default security profile of Vista/IE 7 disables ActiveX. |

Trust me, you're better off mending your KEB account and putting it into working order.

No, you can't. You have to physically go to Nonghyup each time you need to execute a wire transfer.

No. Nonghyup doesn't have automatic remittance accounts like KEB does.

Yes, but, according to my Nonghyup experience, you can't do remittances from it online. Nonghyup allows you to merely check your balance. Koreans can remit monies and do wire transfers from their accounts, but foreigners can't. BS.Dos.'s experience doesn't match mine. I wonder if it's a fluke he was successful. Anyone?

No. They won't register your overseas account information with your Nonghyup bank account. Again, go with KEB. KEB does all this. I hope you get your situation with them sorted out. |

I don't have an automatic remittance account at KEB. I have a standard deposit account. But, after I registered my remittance account info, I was able to do a wire transfer from that account from a KEB ATM.
What you're saying, though, is that NH doesn't offer this service. Right? |

| As far as I know, they don't. It's all walk-in and waiting with Nonghyup. I have the KEB account that automatically transfers to America whatever money I put in it. I don't have to use a KEB machine. I can do a simple bank transfer from, coincidentally, my Nonghyup account. |

| Just to clarify, I haven't actually transfered any funds as yet online, but I did notice a Remittance entry section on the transfer page. It may turn out that I'm mistaken as Mouse points out, although the teller in the bank assured me that I could wire transfer from my PC. I hope so, as I'm hoping to transfer cash from Korea when I'm back in the UK later this year. |

| I'm going back to KEB tomorrow afternoon (for the fourth time) to see if they can fix what's broken. If not, maybe my best option is to open one of those automatic remittance accounts at KEB and a regular account at Nonghyup for my regular day-to-day stuff. |

I'm with Nonggyup and so far I've liked the service. They gave me a check card and online banking the day I signed up. I am able to make wire transfers in Korea, but have not set up the remittance account yet. I will be trying that on Monday. From what I have read on the site, they do have a automatic remittance account that is linked with the account from your home country.
I can post back what happens when I go on Monday to set up the account. |
