My favorite from the job ads:
"Korea is the undiscovered jewel of NE Asia offering a modern infrastructure, friendly people, magnificent cuisine and an unparalleled land of beauty for your moments when not in the classroom or workplace to combine to make your stay in Korea one that you will remember all you life. "

Modern infrastructure? Absolutely
Friendly people? No, even your new Korean friend will try to get out of paying you back for a loan by making up excuses who is just using you. Be aware, you are not going on this trip to make friends nor is it a vacation nor should you expect to feel accepted and comfortable, but you should expect personal safety.
Magnificant cuisine? You got to be joking. My favorite Korean food is gamjatung with pork and potatoes and then friend rice, though most people at home could not eat this hot spicy food. The fried foods and western foods are horrible so just stick with all that magnificant Korean cuisine if in Korea.
Land of beauty? It is a very beautiful mountainous land, but is polluted and tarnished due to reckless manufacturing and too many cars in the valleys where sick air just sits low on the people in the valleys. Climb mountain trails on your days off for a fresher breath of air and aerial views of what Korean actually looks like. It's hubs of white high rise boxes surrounded by smog, but the mountains are left green as a reminder of just how beautiful this land must had been when people lived on the mountain sides and then farmed rice in the valleys before westernization happened. |
