had this for the first time tonight, im unning on vista, got the laptop in the uk. the laptop automatically restarted.
Is this a serious problem? If it happens again will it destroy my laptop?
What can be done to fix it?
Please bare in mind im not a mad computor wizz.....

Well, it can't be good. Kind of implied with the term BSOD.
More details please.
What were you doing when it occurred?
Was there an error code? you should make note of those. If you didn't have time (the comp shutdown right away), then look at the logs in "administrative tools" -> computer management" to see what happened. We need that error code or event log detail to know more.
Is the laptop well-cooled? Make and model? Some laptops are more prone to heat issues.
Anti-virus software installed? |

Try starting it, interrupting the start up before windows starts (F10?) and start in safe mode. If it starts OK in this mode, it's probably a virus.
Try running your virus scanner in safe mode, before re-starting in normal mode.
Just a suggestion as to what to try first, IMO.
Is your Vista up to date with updates/SP1? When you get it stable, do a back-up onto DVDs. After set-up I backed up our laptop on 4 DVDs, invaluable for any future problems. |
