I'm thinking of going there at the end of December/beginning of January en route to Yemen. Anyone been there? Seems like a cheap, tourist-friendly, slightly richer and nicer version of Morocco that is worth checking out. I've checked out Lonely Planet's thorn tree, but that's about it so far. |

I ALMOST went there back in 98. They have some pretty decent safari packages there. I don't know if that's what you're into, but it looked pretty good and cheap when I was checking it out. |

Had a discussion with a couple of Germans in Malaysia in September. They'd been to Tunisia. I was in Morocco last year. We came to the conclusion that it was a pretty similar gig. It would be interesting to hear from someone who had been to both.
BTW I had a great time in Morocco. |

Yeah, I spent two months in Morocco, had a great time. I would consider going back, but the cost is about the same, so I figure why not see a new country? |

I did 2 days in Tunis in 1984, so all I can remember is this.
In the city of Tunis I remember the main drag with all kinds of shops and outdoor tavernas/cafes dotting the sides...mixed in with commerce and lots of people. I found a bazzar or "sook/souk" market place, had my photo taken with a nice gent with a plate of flowers for sale... and met some Russian sailors in a brothel/bar. That's all I remember and I apologize if I didn't help you any...I was very young in 1984.
Palm trees.
and drinking.

i'm also considering Senegal, which is suposed to be pretty cool too. Its around 250-300 bucks more though to fly there ($325 to Tunisia, $600 Senegal). Since I've already been to Morocco, which supposedly is like Tunisia, I might have to splurge a bit and go to Senegal. Decesions, decesions. |

Flying from what city? I'm assuming you'll either be in a European hub like Frankfurt or a Middle Eastern hub like Abu Dubai???
If I were anywhere at all in that area, I'd be heading for Ethiopia - I mean if you are looking for north Africa..
Bonus points with Ethiopia is its not all that far from Yemen.. just across the Red Sea.. and while I've never been there.. I've often dreamed of checking it out.. extremely unique in the world.
Tunisia can't be all that different from Morrocco.. I mean.. comparitively to Ethiopia which is a world unto itself. |

On Tunisia.
Two week package tour to Hammamet on the coast. Idiot British pikey tourists everywhere, and smarmy greasy local letharios trying to get it on with my girl everytime my back was turned every sodding day we were there. Hassled to buy things everywhere I went. Walks along the beach gave me the revolting experience of encountering western male sex tourists purchasing the favors of teenage boys, couldn't buy anything at local prices; multiplied by god knows what for foreigners (was charged UK prices for nasty chemical beer). Absolutely fuggin horrible place. My mistake for taking a cheap package tour to a resort. This my experience. Have a friend who worked in the British Council in Tunis, and had a great time. |

I've been fascinated with the idea of going to Senegal myself. It sounds like one of the more stable contries in the area and should prove to be substantially different from the Mediterranean countries.
Ethiopia sounds great too. I think I would want to have a good bit of time available if I were to be going there though.
I vote Senegal. |

Yeah ditto Senegal.
You've been to Morocco.
Maybe Tunisia is similar.
If you can only do one go somewhere completely different to what you've done before.
I bet Senegal's a billion times different.
I've still got the couch offer in Yemen right...?
What airline flies via Senegal and then onto the Middle East ? |

yeah, still the couch offer still stands. That is, if i have a couch .
As for my plan, I will be in London and Paris with my family for about 10 days around x-mas time. I figured it would be a waste of money to fly back to the states, only to come back to that side of the Atlantic 2 weeks later on my way to Yemen. My course in Yemen doesn't start until Jan. 10th, so I have a little more than 10 days to kill. Europe is pretty chilly in winter plus quite expensive, so I figured why not somewhere further south?
Thanks for the Ethiopia idea Tiger, but I think it'll be cheaper to just fly from Yemen to Ethiopia or Djioubuti instead of from Europe. |

I think we talked about this once before.
Ethiopian Airlines flies to Yemen from Europe via Addis Ababa.
It's another option. You'd get a free stopover and I bet Ethiopian Airlines is dirt cheap also.
I'm sure Senegal and Tunisia are cool too though. |
