We're trying to narrow down which city to live in and whether or not to go PS or private. If one were to work in a larger city i.e., Busan, Seoul, Daegu areas, will they most likely be required to teach summer/winter camps? I've read that a lot of rural locations will close their PS doors from late July to late August and the teachers do not have to show up for that period. Does the opposite apply for PS in large cities? Aside from being assured that we'll be paid on time and have our pension paid I do not see the advantage of PS, unless we'd actually be getting rougly 2 months vacation, considering we'd be making 1.8 and nothing more. Thanks again for all of your help! |

Not coming during the students vacation periods is at the discretion of the principal. There are lots of people on here during every vacation break complaining about sitting in an empty school (rural and city).
At least the camps give you something to do. You still usually end up going home early and often get "extra consideration" if you did a good job with your camps.
None of the public school programs pay as low as 1.8 anymore.
GEPIK starts at 2 mil (only a BA) for 22 classes per week and 20k for each extra class. Take some of your extra time after you get here and complete a TESOL and bump that up another 100k. Work a couple afternoon classes per week and add another 200k. Work in a rural school (even if you live in the city) and get another 100k.
My co-worker (GEPIK), in her first year, was earning in excess of 2.4 per month, 8:40-4:40, m-f, + full benefits + 4 weeks contracted vacation and housing (40m2) at Seohyun station with nothing more than a BA. She re-signed, got bumped up a level and added 2 more weeks paid vacation (6 weeks total).
Look at the NEW packages offered by the government programs before you decide where / where not to jump.
