I love my hakwon because my boss is good to me and treats me right. He listens to my experience (he doesn't have any with youngsters), and makes good decisions based on my opinion and the opinion of the other teachers. He's not a penny pincher, but he's not a fool with his dough either. He's a good person and I respect him.

I have been at my school for three years now.

The owner is extremely supportive. Recently, he purchased computers and projectors for each classroom and gave the teachers 1 million won to have a ski weekend in January.

I make a much higher-than-average salary with extra vacation written into the contract. Plus, a very generous housing allowance.

I have almost complete freedom over the ciricuum in my classes.

I am treated with respect by the staff and students and treat others the same way.

There is zero chance of the horror stories happening at my school. Stability and reputation make sure that never happens.

Finding the right situation is always not easy. Talk to former teachers and go to the school beforehand, if possible. After finding a good situation, make yourself an asset that the school needs. You will have a much better work experience (regardless of field) if you do your best.

I quite like mine. Here's why:

- competent, flexible and organized management
- motivated adult students
- pay is on time, every time
- good curriculum
- aesthetic work environment
- good pay

I might be leaving something out, but hopefully my point is made that it's a good place to work.

Wow, that is such a relief. Thanks for the replies Smile
I was getting a little weary with my application process and guess I just needed to see that there are good schools out there.

It's good to hear that people do have positive experiences, even at hakwons. However, don't ever forget that hakwons are private enterprises (save the few incorporated ones). If tough times hit, you'll get the axe from your nicer than nice boss, and they'll try to squeeze every cent they can out of you out the door. Seen it happen more than once.

I really like my job. My directors are kind, honest, flexible;accomodating. I make a high salary in comparison to all the job postings I see listed. I worked for two previous schools that were less than honest, who over worked you to the bone, and never seemed to escape the bottom line of making a buck. I have a two bedroom apartment, I live by the beach; I don't start work until 4 pm, and I finish at 9 30 with an hour break in between. My boss has also put my wife and daughter on the national insurance plan. I have been taken out to eat lunch and dinner on numerous occasions. I am so thankful to have found this job! Very Happy

I enjoyed my job last year. The owner treated the foreign teachers well, no issues with late payments and all health and pension payments were legit.

That said I do think your co-teachers, both foreign and Korean, make a huge difference to your experience. If you get on well with them it's great if not then it's a lot less fun having to spend most of the day with them - especially if you're not in an area where it's easy to meet new people.
