Yes, you can get the discount card. You can also sign up for the Korail membership which will alllow you to book online. You'll need to understand Korean (they took the English off of their site). You'll also need a Korean credit card, or a check card that Korail will accept. They accept my KEB credit card, but not my KEB check card. They also accept my Standard Chartered check card as well. |

I remember a few years back when I had difficulty reserving tikets online (read: impossible), the guy yelled at me that foreigners were not allowed to reserve tickets because "the KTX was for Koreans, not foreigners".

Everyone has bad experiences regardless of the country. Don't sum a country by the actions of a single person. |

I don't. However, I do have dozens of experiences that allow me to ridicule that stupid little catch phrase anytime I wish. |

I've been here more than 2 years and experienced virtually no racism or similar problems. Perhaps it is you that is provoking the outrage. |

I would advise against reserving tickets online with korail. We tried to do that last year for a friend of my wife. downloading the software to be able to make a reservation crashed both and my wife's computer. Since the website needed active X to run the reservation program we couldn't even attempt it on my mac after we crashed our other computers numerous times. |

I've been here 13+ and I am afraid Young Frankenstein is right. While you could never say that ALL Koreans are this and/or that, I would say that enough people here have had enough experiences to at least suggest that there is an unpleasant trend occuring.
I can read Korean so the site is no problem for me...But for a non-Korean that can't...you are screwed. There are idiots in every country, but I think the difference (at least for me) is that the idiocy that is on display here every day in some official capacity. In Young Frank's case, it wasn't some disgruntled, drunken old ajoshi saying the KTX wasn't for foreigners, it was an employee of Korail saying it. They are two very different things.
Now, you (or some other apologist) might say that this one employee doesn't represent the view of Korail, any of its other employees or Koreasn in general. I would have to call BS on that because, as you will learn, you would have no recourse whatsoever when this kind of (illegal actually) discrimination happens to you. THAT is the thing that pisses most people off. Don't for a second think that the views of this "one Korean person" don't reflect the views of Korean society as a whole. |

As far as I remember, you will need to present your card. I am not sure if a passport is good enough (though you won't have that either if your ARC is getting made right now).
The KTX member card allows you access to the KTX lounge to wait for your teain. They have free coffee, free internet and free wireless if you have your own computer. It's a pretty nice palce to wait for your train compared to out in the big hall with the rest of the passengers. And if you can figure out the SMS ticket (it gets sent to your cell phone) say goodbye to lineups. It is pretty sweet. |

By giving people silly childish labels like "apologist" you are merely revealing your own lack of tolerance for people who are not like yourself. |

I lack tolerance for people who try to excuse unacceptable behavior. Just because it has never happened to you doesn't mean it has never happened. Just because it has never happened to you doesn't mean that the Korail employee in Young Frank's case was justified in saying what he did.
Despite being childish and silly, I still managed to answer the OP's question...while you did not. Thanks for coming out. |

No, I don't go around all day with a chip on my shoulder looking for a fight. I am actually able to converse and interact with Koreans quite uneventfully on a daily basis. Perhaps I just happened to run into an asshole. They do exist, even in Korea. |
