| Does anyone know if a local check is actually good? I just called my local police department and they said the local check only covers any crimes committed in that specific county??? Surely Korea won't accept that. I'm guessing I need to ship off fingerprints and get the real deal holyfield FBI investigation to be safe? |

Immigration regulations state that a local check is acceptable:

Also, one person whom I know personally successfully obtained his E-2 visa with a local background check (local sheriff's department). I've heard of others who have done likewise.
So yes, a local check is acceptable. You do not need to get an FBI check.

ditto.. my check was from my city only.
no state. no federal/FBI.
my E2 visa is now sitting ready for use in my passport. |

| yeah my local check worked. I just got my visa number so Korean immi. in Korea totally accepted it. |

At the moment Wednesday April 30, 2008
Private institutes: Federal, State and local checks are accepted
Public Schools:
SMOE: dunno
EPIK:
If you apply directly through EPIK or through an agency, you will get a Federal check.
However, if you are coming in a hurry they may overlook this and allow a state check.
If you apply through an Embassy, State checks are ok.
State checks are also able to be used as an interim whilst waiting for your Federal.
GENERAL RULE with EPIK is though..get a FEDERAL check done.
GEPIK: State and local checks are ok.
Some employers request certain checks to be done. If you want that particular job, you have to comply.
So you can get a visa with a local check at the moment, in the future however, applicants may have to either get a Federal check or there may be no checks needed at all. State and local checks are potentially problematic.

Your friendly neighborhood cop shop. Not all of them will provide one, though; some, like my hometown's "finest," refer all inquirers to the state police. |
