|
|
I've read through the FAQ posts on Birth Control in Korea, but I was wondering if anyone knew if there is an equivalent of the brand Lo-Ovral here.
It's a 28-tablet pack and is comprised of norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol.
I was planning on going to the doctor and finding out what's available here, but I still haven't gotten my health insurance straightened out.
Thanks |

Go to the doctor anyway. The consult without insurance is only 10k-12k won. Ask a Korean co-worker for the nearest "woman's hospital (ob/gyn clinic). The doctor should speak English well enough to deal with this.
(the fee may be double that if you go to an international clinic).

most pharmacists speak E, so you can walk into any of them until you find one that does, and just ask her (a lot are women). try writing the name down - not the brand but the actual name (like in your post) and hand it to her when you go. she can tell you if it's available or not. |

Birth control pills are drugs also and new studies have shown that they do increase your chances of getting lung and breast cancers. |

actually, they are NOT drugs but hormones.
and please spare us your layman's POV about alleged "studies" which you don't even bother to cite, or discuss in a professional manner, because DUH, you are unqualified to do so. |

It's common industry practice to refer to birth control pills as drugs. They're made by drug companies. Doctors refer to them as drugs also. I don't see the need to have an overly narrow definition of what a drug is.
Your point about who's qualified to post on this topic doesn't make sense. If only "qualified" people could discuss this then only doctors could have opinions, which is absurd. The information is there for people to make educated conclusions.
Here's the Mayoclinics view on Birth control pills and the link to cancer:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/birth-control-pill/WO00098
"Key factors seem to be how many years you take the pill and how recently you last used the pill. In one study, use of birth control pills led to a higher risk of premenopausal breast cancer in women who took the pill for four or more years before having a baby."
Doctors usually think treatment for breast cancer is successful if the patient lives longer than just 5 years. I think if men were asked to take a comparable male birth-control drug the drug companies wouldn't make that much money. |

Just show up at the pharmacist with the name like the other poster said, or show them the box if you have it, they'll give you the equivalent. They do speak good English usually. |

and for any other women browsing this: Diane/ Estelle is now prescription only (it changed sometime last year) and its pricier now too: around W14,000 for one month's supply. Be aware that its also not as common as some of the other tablets. I live near a uni, and had to go to 5 different pharmacies until I found it, and even there they had only one packet, and had to order more in for me. |

Birth controls in Korea are all available without prescription, but I would go get a check up first before getting on any meds..
Incidentally, it's funny how most people who have replied to this thread are men.. LOL.. |
