It seems KB Bank may be rooting-out and canceling foreign international ATM cards from people who have had them for years.

Has this happened to anyone else?

represent us well my friend...

make sure you make a big stink about the inability of foreigners to withdraw THEIR OWN money from Korean banks while on vacation overseas.

I noticed this on vacation. After 5 years of faithful service, my privilege was revoked. This is probably the next logical step ALL banks will now take. Sad

Here's a clue for all you foreigners: Leave KB bank, even if you don't use an international ATM, and leave a letter for the bank admins stating why you are leaving.

So which bank would you recommend?

I keep hearing good things about Standard Charter and KEB bank. KEB was the bank offering free gifts for filling out surveys so KEB could respond better to foreigner's needs.

I bank at Hana Bank and was given an international ATM card (a true international one) in 2006. Since then, some people have reported problems getting them, some have no problems, but it still works.

If you haven't read this, please read it. It contains the legal issues of banking and problems faced at some Hana Banks:

the main reason i'm going is to raise hell about the banking regs and how nothing has changed since the november meeting where people were raising hell and they said "they would look into it"

I intend to bring the articles from the Korea Times that have run.

after weds they may not invite me again. heck the moderator Anne L. has been pushing on this and it seems they didnt want her back as moderator since she was grilling the koreans when they would duck the questions. In fact I will email her about this again tonite

I had a working international ATM card but it doesn't work anymore( found out while I was on vacation) It 's too bad.... I felt it was the safest method when travelling.

It really doesn't leave many other options.

Travelers cheques....

Quote:
Yes, but if they are LOST or STOLEN you will need to return to Korea to get a refund. Cash will give you less problem and will have about the same security as a Korean issued travelers check (and that includes the big name ones like VISA or AMEX).

They are NOT like travelers checks from home.

Cash....

Did that once on a trip to Thailand and got robbed Rolling Eyes

If you want the "overseas ATM" ability just get a secured credit card from KEB. It can be used to withdraw money overseas on a debit base so you won't have to pay interest. I too have a KB inter ATM but, to the best of my knowledge, I don't think it's been canceled.
