[Darkness]

So this week, I'm TRYING to use songs for use with listening skills. So I have been giving lyrics, sometimes with missing words, and a vocab list for them to fill in the blanks. But either they complain the song is too boring, or some other b.s. I was using City and Colour's - Sometimes, as it's very easy to understand. So the 1st class complained it was too slow, so the next class I used that song and The Anthem by Good Charolette. Which they weren't too interested in either...picky bastards!

Anyway, anyone know a decent song that I could remove some words from and have them work in pairs to fill in the spaces. I'm in a high school, so I need something fairly decent. Either that, or I just keep picking the music, and to hell with them if they like it or not!

I know I can't please them all, and this isn't a hogwon, so I"m not an entertainer, but at the same time I want them interested.

Mika's Lollipop was a big hit around Valentine's Day with both classes I used it in. Simple, catchy, yet challenging in parts, the kids were singing along without me asking and requesting it again and again. Of course, my students are much younger than yours, but going by what I've heard of Korean popular music I wouldn't hesitate to use it with the older set as well. Past songs have always had very vocal detractors, this was my one unqualified success. And it has a fun animated video with onscreen lyrics to help them with their gap fills if they're quick enough to catch them.

High School, right? Ask them who they like and go from there. If they can't tell you, then tell them they have to listen to the songs you like--that'll get 'em to speak up!

I usually go to the Billboard Hot 100 site for new material, since the songs there are current and appeal to the masses. My kids like Rihanna's "Umbrella," Justin Timberlake's "Senorita," the Backstreet Boys' "I Want it That Way," and Westlife's "My Love."

Some kids walked in while I was doing something with "YMCA" and flipped out. So on the spot we learned that song today. One kid yelled out "GAME SONG!" but I HEARD "gay song" and was shocked that he knew that.

I recently taught my class Josh Groben "Don't Give Up." I really thought they wouldn't like it but they loved it. Go figure.

Also, they like Proclaimers "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)."

my kids seem to like billy joel and elvis.
for listening i usually take key words out of the song and write them pretty big on separate small pieces of paper and scatter them about the table. then play the song. the children will have to grab the word as it is sung. it helps them with prediction pretty good too.
you can also use the words and have the kids make their own song.
