It's not that simple.

Also, some of my friends/relatives in Canada have told me that Korean companies have, in their advertising, insinuated that they were Japanese. In fact, KIA has done more than insinuate they're Japanese.

However, when the same respondents were asked about product quality, a mere 39.7 percent said that Korean products were reliable, less than half the 81.8 percent who said the same of Japanese products. That means it is helpful for Korean brands to be thought of as Japanese. |

I'm curious as to what ads insinuate they're japanese? Maybe a link to a video?
I was in Canada last summer and I can't really recall any of the Korean commercials hinting that they were japanese. Before coming to Korea I thought they were japanese, but the commercials didn't really push my towards that assumption. Just my ignorance. |

I thought it was a German company. Until I came here and realized it used to be Lucky Goldstar, the crappy cheap t.v. manufacturer. |

Wasn't that the whole idea behind naming the company "Lucky Goldstar"? And wasn't "Sony" a word made up because the Japanese thought that it is a word that Americans might think was English (ie American)? |

LG (Lifes Good) - Korean company deliberately using an "English slogan" (brand) to sell its products on the international market
Hyundai is marketed in Australia and NZ - pronounced on advertisements as
Hie - oon - die (Japanese pronunciation) |

So why single out the Americans in your thread title? |

Korean companies know that the perception of Korean products is not good, so they deliberately try to pass off their products as not being Korean.
Korean cosmetics with French names
Korean clothes and shoes with French and Italian names
Korean appliances with German sounding names |

The same thing has been done in many companies around the world, it's not an original Korean concept... that would be hard to find... |
