What does the D stand for in D-Day?

I thought maybe Normandy...but what do I know...

D-day
�noun 1. Military. the day, usually unspecified, set for the beginning of a planned attack.
2. June 6, 1944, the day of the invasion of western Europe by Allied forces in World War II.
3. Informal. any day of special significance, as one marking an important event or goal.

Also, D-Day.

Hi, just to add to the above statement...but actually give you the correct answer that you were seeking: the "D" simply stands for "departure"...the Allied Fleet departed England for the Normandy coast on June 6th 1944.

My father was there, and battled his way across Europe to northern Germany...helping sweep the SS out of the way in France and Holland...while the Brits and Yanks delt with the regular German army. (His ink drawings from the Normany beaches are in the collection of the [new] Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.)
