|

how widely accepted or not are they in Korea? To be honest I`ve never paid any attention.......I`ve applied for a Nationwide Bank card in the UK purely for the free overseas transaction fees. Problem is that the cash cards are Cirrus only.
(Hopefully I`ll qualify for the debit (Visa) so wont have to worry about that. but might end up with a Cirrus) |

ATM cards work in all countries around the world. Except for Korea.
In Seoul, you can find "global ATMs" at popular areas like Jongno (City Hall and Gwanghwamun), Insadong and other places.
I recently read that KEB has some ATMs outside of Seoul that will work, too. |

I live a few hours away from Seoul, in a much smaller city and I have used my cirrus card in a KEB bank. I am sure some of the other banks will have an international cash machine too. |

another korean hater comment eh .........actually Japan is as bad....if not worse than Korea for trying to use your ATM card. One of the few places you can use your card is at the post office |

i have a maestro/cirrus card from HSBC in the UK. you should be able to use it in about 90% of the 7/11, family mart type places. you wont see an option when you swipe your card, just select Mastercard and then select your savings account - it took me about 2 months to figure that one out!! If you can read a bit of korean then you should be able to use it in a few more machines and at some banks as well, i've found very few bank machines accept my card however.
what are the fees like for your new account?? for mine i have a graduate plus account with HSBC, i pay a flat fee of 10 a month for the account and then all my transactions a free and they only charge about 4 or 5 pound to do a money transfer as well. is yours any better? |

There are machines that accept Mastercard, Cirrus etc outside of Seoul, sometimes in the most unlikely places. You just have to pay attention and look for them. I've used my Royal Bank of Scotland card here no bother. |

look for "Cash Zone" signs in the windows of some convenience stores. They have the red ATMs. You can get up to 100,000 won at a time for a 5000 won fee. Good for extreme emergencies. |

Yep, same here. I have an RBS maestro card. I use my KEB bank that has "foreign card acceptable" option. Out of the four machines in the bank one takes my card (I'm in a small city of 30 000 people, and it's no problem, some people here really need to get out of Seoul sometimes and check the rest of the country out. Seoul is NOT the be all and end all)
Slightly different from you, I always select the checking account option and withdraw on that. I only have the one card for the one account, and it seems to work.
My RBS is pretty good, if I withdraw 50 000 won it's like this on my RBS statement:
50000.00won, RATE 1987.2813, CHARGE 0.69, ERTF 2.00
So I think it's only a couple of quid. When I lived in Sweden I used to withdraw from my RBS account and realised that it was dumb to walk around with loads of travellers cheques and currency when my card is really not that much different costwise. Savings were minimal. |
