| My visa is up on 29th June, and I want to stay in Korea until 8th July. Do I need to go to immigration to get a visa extention or is there a 'grace' period where I get some time to exit after my visa is up? |

It doesn't matter when your VISA is expiring. The only date that matters is the one on your ARC. You must be past airport immigration by 11:59PM on the day it expires.
If you need to stay after that date, Yes, you do have to go to immi to extend. You can do it free of charge for up to 30 days, but you cannot work on this extension.

ARC
passport
AND your exit ticket
to get the free extension.

If the time period of your overstay is short:
You get delayed when you try to exit through passport control.
You will be taken to a side room.
You will be questioned / delayed / lectured about the bad thing you did.
You WILL be fined 100k won
AND
You will have an immigration notation made in your file for the violation of immigration law.
If the time period of your overstay is longer:
The fine goes up exponentially and you will be held in detention until it is paid.
It will have consequences IF you choose to ever come back.
(as an example: IF you have had a previous E2 and NO violation you are exempt from the consular interview when applying for a new visa - you can make a simple visa run instead of being required to apply from your home country).
All this to avoid a simple, free extension that CAN be done on-line (with documentation faxed to immigration) or with a simple visa to your local immigration office.

| I was told by Immigration at Busan Harbour that you have one day to leave the country after the expiration of your VISA which is on your ARC. After that you get fined. |

And I know 1 person that was 4 days late but managed to escape paying the fine. I know 1 other person who was a week late (for medical reasons) who was not fined (but the notation was made in their respective files).
I also know of about 20 who were fined anywhere from 100k - 2 million for overstays.
Is it really worth it to avoid a FREE extension?

I never said to avoid the free extention. I was just stating what Immigration officers told me in Busan. Also I was four days late to leave at that time which is how I found this out. I got a long lecture from them but I was not fined. However I did get the notation in my file. Thankfully it has never hurt me getting any new VISA's.
Also, one of my friends stayed for 2 months past his exit date. This happened because his school told him that they wanted to resign him. But, have him start 2 months after his finish date. I warned him to check his status but he never did. Amazingly he managed to avoid the fine because the school admitted they did not inform him of his exit responsibilities. Don't know if they paid a fine. Also his next visa was only good for 6 months. Since then he has been here on normal 1 year visas.
p.s. I don't recommend you do what my friend did and I recommend that you listen to the poster above my post.

| My first year here I was 9 months over. Was lied to by my boss. Told me he took care of everything. This was back in 2004, I had no idea what was going on and fell for the it's ok "I'm Korean person I can do". When I went to leave they took me to the room with my soon to be wife. I played dumb and acted very sorry. They never fined me, but it was something like 7 million won or something stupid like that. |
